Remove George Gardiner-38's parents?

It appears to me that Gardiner-38 was merged with Gardiner-1056 incorrectly. This profile has been PPP'd and is tagged as part of the PGM project. I think his father should be removed - either a leader could do it or at least remove the PPP so I could do it. Its pretty clear his father was not Michael Gardiner, but obviously, there could be new evidence that would make this link valid, but the disputed parentage section is pretty definitive. Thanks!

I'm re-opening this because a descendant continues to insist that PGM immigrant Gardiner was the son of Michael Gardiner and Margaret Browne, that George had a first wife named Sarah Slaughter, by whom he had a son Benoni Gardiner.

The descendant cites The Gardiner-Gardner genealogy (published in 1936). But that genealogy offers no  proof that the George Gardiner son of Michael and Margaret baptized 15 Feb 1599 at Holy Cross Church, Greenford Magna, County Middlesex was the same as:

  • the George Gardiner who married Sarah Slaughter 29 March 1630 at St. James Parish, Clerkenwell, London
  • father of Benoni Gardiner,born about 1636, died 1731
In 2000, Rhode Island Roots reprinted an article that was initially published in the genealogical column of The Rhode Island Telephone & Genealogical and History Repository, Vol. 1, No. 1, Wickford, RI, September 15, 1883. That article (subscription required) included:
The following memoranda are taken from a bible printed in London in 1721, and now [1883] in the possession of Miss Jane Day, of Catskill, NY. This bible came into her possession from her mother, Harriet Gardiner Day, who was the wife of Russell Day, of Catskill, and the daughter of Colonel  John  Gardner, of South Kingstown.

Gardiner
Joseph Gardiner, the youngest of three sons of Sir Thomas Gardiner, Knight of Yorkshire, came over among the first settlers, and died in Kings county, Rhode Island State, aged seventy-eight years, born A.D. 1601, and died 1679; left six sons, viz:
Benoni, died 1731, aged 104.
Henry, died 1731, aged 101
William, died at sea by pirates
George lived to see ninety-four years
Nicholas and Joseph lived also to be a great age

The names of the son of Joseph's sons in this bible uncannily match the names of the supposed sons of immigrant George Gardiner by his common-law wife Herodias Long Hicks.

A 1944 TAG article (subscription required) makes a very strong case for Benoni being born in the mid 1640s, oldest son of George Gardiner by his common-law wife, Herodias Long.

Kirk,

Yes it does look like a bad merge occurred. That's such a pity. So yes, he should be detached as son of Michael Gardiner.

Also, in re-reading the narrative, it appears that while a George Gardiner did marry a Sarah Slaughter, there is no proof that this George was either the son of Michael OR the immigrant to New England. So she should be detached as well-- as both the immigrants spouse and as mother of any of his children (if she is).

I've detached Michael and Sara Slaughter from the profile of this George Gardiner.
