Just 47 years ago, men first set foot on the moon. That famous moment would never have been possible without the efforts and mathematical genius of Katherine Johnson and her colleagues. These black women overcame the prejudice against them both as women and as blacks.
The experiences of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson as they worked at NASA to help make Apollo 11 and that famous first step for mankind possible are the subject of the book Hidden Figures, by Margot Lee Shetterly, which has now been made into a major motion picture, due out in January 2017.
