Nickname shows twice, but not on edit screen

Have seen this several times today. db_errors report for 721 - Separators in first name, shows nickname twice in " " on the report and the also on profile, but in edit screen all is fine. First name field has no nickname in " " and nickname is in correct field with no " ". Only way I've found to correct it is to retype the nickname.  Then the all is well - only one nickname.  Soooo, why is the system thinking the "nickname" is in the first name field with " " and I need to retype it in the nickname field to fix it???

Didn't correct this one for analyses:  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bryson-75

I seem to remember a similar problem a little time ago.  I think that having two sets of quotation marks makes them invisible in the edit screen.  By re-typing the nickname you eliminate that without ever seeing it.  Or something like that..........  :)
Oh,OK - that does sound vaguely familiar, but still wondering why these are on a db_errors report that should only be concerned with what's wrong in the 1st name field and there is nothing.

It looks like a bug in wikitree. It was aready discussed in this thread regarding error 512. http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/251100/new-error-debate-separators-in-first-name?show=251110#a251110

My guess for this is import from gedcom. And quoted name wasn't moved to nickname.

It apears that when entering edit mode, quoted text is stripped from first name. If you then save the profile, it is gone for good. So when correcting quotation, you should add lost name to nicknames.

Missed that discussion :/  Will make sure to get any hidden names entered before saving - thanks.

Could it be the space at end of Proper First Name and Preferred Name?  (Error report says separator in first name field. Space is a separator.)

I'll experiment with that - there are many of them to test various solutions.

ETA: You're right - just did two, and they did have space after name. Only edit was to back space it away, did nothing with the nickname and on profile view, no more double middle in " ".  Still don't understand it, but back spacing a space is a lot less work than retyping whole names. Will skip over them for this report, in case folks who can understand it, want to play around with them

I said I was going to leave these alone, but couldn't resist this one

On report and profile this is what was: James "Jamie" Edward "Jamie" Norris

On edit screen all that showed was James in 1st and preferred fields and Jamie in nickname. NO Edward anywhere. There was a space after James, I deleted it and saved - that's it.  Profile now is James "Jamie" Norris - where was Edward hiding??? and where did it go???

ETA: on changes tab it shows that I deleted "Jamie" Edward from the name field, leaving just James, when all I did was delete a single space.

A space may be only the visible (yes we can sort of see spaces) displayed part of what is stored somewhere in the database (maybe with quotes around it).   And any kind of edit may cause the other invisible part to be dropped.  Although just kind of guessing since it's harder trouble shooting invisible problems. :) But good to know deleting space solves it.

I just cleared the Proper First Name field and re-entered Artemia only. You can see it in the Changes Tab.

Artemia "Artie" appeared in the Proper First Name field but  it was not visible due to the " ".
