welsh in U.S. ???

Question

Hi fellow gene-poolers

The algorithm is connecting me to Madog Ap Maledudd of powrys, wales.I think it may be close, but, not accurate. Close is close enough, I am less interested in Royal connections, as I am curious , about, the need or interest of my ancestors to migrate, to the U.S.
Was it an optimistic move?,  one necessary for sustainability, was the land controlled by the too few? they had no choice, what ever the case, I never imagined, I would see the names of relatives 800 years ago

Note...I have Irish and Scottish heritage as well, wasn't aware of the Welsh. A British man working in U.S. as an importer, he made a joking comment, he said...."the British would have inhabited Ireland, but the Welsh got thier first"...I thought it was funny!

My second great-grandparents emigrated from Wales in 1841.  He was an illiterate farm worker, she an illiterate housemaid.  If they had stayed in Wales, that's what they would have been all their lives.  Instead, they came to western New York state, where there was a fairly large group of Welsh immigrants already, learned to read and write, and became successful farmers with a large amount of land.  There was no land and no future for them in Wales.

Depends on when they emigrated; in the 19th century there was demand for coal miners in Pennsylvania, and a lot of Welsh immigrants came over to work in the Pennsylvania coalfields (coal mining in Wales goes back to the 17th or 18th century). If it was earlier, it may have been for religious reasons (there were Welsh Catholics who came to Maryland in the 17th century, and Welsh Quakers who went to Pennsylvania).

 

Also: It's "Madog ap Maredudd" ("Madog" is the source of the surname "Maddox", and "Maredudd" is "Meredith").
