Going to Scotland for Genealogy trip

I am going to Scotland for the first time in September. I am looking for some tips for genealogy research tips.  We will be in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. My main interest is in Porterfields but family Roots run deep in Renfrewshire and Ayrshire.

Here some tentative items on my calendar.

Scotland trip planning

  1. Edinburgh
    1. Scotlands People Center
    1. Court of Lord Lyon (same building as above?)
      1. Search the public record - Look at the 2 Porterfield Crests?
    1. National Library - found some items of interest in the catalog
  1. Glasgow  area
    1. University
      1. Porterfields papers from 1930
    1. The Abbey/Church where John Porterfield was first Bishop of Glasgow
    1. Kilmacolm - small village
      1. Porterfield Tomb in church
    1. Paisley and Paisley Abbey
    2. Porterfield castle remains
    3. Duchal House (former Porterfield residence)
      1. Are some of the grounds open to the public
    1. Porterfield Railway trail walk  - where does it go?

    Would be cool to find:

I envy you Marty, That sounds like a dream trip to me. I have a personal connection to the areas you are visiting, My grandfathers family was from Glasgow and my sister spent some time at Edinburgh when she spent her semester abroad during collage. Have a very productive trip.
