Hi all...

I am currently looking for any facts about a specific Sproul family that lived in Pennsylvania (and possibly NY) prior to moving to Toronto (York), Ontario, Canada around 1841, then settling in Huron Co., Ontario around 1859.

According to a local history titled "Reflections of West Wawanosh" the family included: Father: David Sproul (b. Scotland d.1870); Mother: Margaret (nee Lindsay) Sproul (b. abt 1812, Scotland d.1895 ); Daughter: Caroline Sproul b. abt 1839. Pennsylvania. m. James Walker m. William McGrattan d. 1919)

A number of children were born after David and Margaret arrive in Canada (Matthew, John, Margaret, Janet, Mary) but I suspect there were more children that either arrived from Scotland and/or were born in the U.S.

The 1842 Census for Toronto gives a cabinet maker by the name of David Sproul, whose family consists of 1 person born in Canada, 4 in the U.S., and 3 in Scotland. 1 of these is a female servant (likely the 3rd person born in Scotland). 2 of the children are boys born between 1829-1837. The 3 remaining children (2 girls and 1 boy) are born between 1838-1842. 2 of these 3 children were born in the U.S.)

An Andrew Sproul (b. 1832, New York) appears in Huron Co., around the same time as the other Sprouls. His connection to David Sproul is unknown but my speculation is that he is one of the sons born in the U.S. based on a number of cicumstantial facts:

1) Andrew settles in close proximity to the other Sprouls

2) Andrew is a Chair Maker (and later an undertaker and coffin maker) a fitting trade for a son of a Cabinet Maker.

3) Andrew's wife is Rebina nee West (a less common name) and one of David's Grand-Daughters is named Rebina West Kilpatrick, (possibly named after an aunt?)

Interestingly, a David Spoal arrived in NY on board the Camillus in early 1833, and a Mrs. Sprowll (with 2 children David and Andrew) arrive on the same ship later that same year.

***edit: date for Camillus corrected as suggested
