How can I connect the two separate Biggs families of South Alabam who claim not to be related?

I am of Biggs - Biggs ancestry.  My father was a Biggs and so was my mother.  I know that they were 3rd cousins from the same area of Alabama.  There is another clan of Biggs in the same general area that claim not to be related to our Biggs tree as they can't find a connection.  I would like to find out if the two Biggs families are connected.  I have completed the Ancestry.Com DNA test and this was not a lot of help.  Can you assist me with this and which comprehensive test do I need to purchase?

AncestryDNA might not be sufficient to cover as far back as you need to go. You will need to do a Y-DNA test, like that offered at FamilyTreeDNA (AncestryDNA Y test went away). I would recommend the Y-37 test, since it provides enough differentiation. The trick is that you need to have to have a direct male Biggs descendant of their line to take the test as well.

Having had my test done, I can tell you that there are at least three distinct genetic lines.

  1. Originated in North Carolina from England (can't remember Kent or Bath) They moved into the south and Tennessee Valley. "I" Haplogroup
  2. Originated in New York from England (can't remember Kent of Bath). They moved into Maryland/Virginia. "I" Haplogroup
  3. Originated in Virginia/Pennsylvania as Baggs/Beggs/Boggs from Ulster/Scotland. The last name was changed to Biggs around 1820. They spread to the Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley, etc. They were down in Alabama by the time the Civil War ended. "R1B"Haplogroup

Hi David,

Have you joined WikiTree yet, and keep track of your genealogical data here? Your post is not linked to a WikiTree user name, so it doesn't look like it is.

Have you researched Census data, or other sources, to try and trace the ancestry of these two lines?

It is unclear how the WikiTree profile that you linked to (Joseph Biggs) relates to what you were saying in the post. Who are your parents? Do they have profiles here on WikiTree?
