I have his military records.   Yes, they spelled it with two ps.  Leoppard.   He was living in Edgefield co SC at the time.   He was a teamster in the 7th SC Infantry.  It was known as the Bloody 7th because of the action they saw.   IT was part of Kershaw's Brigade.  I placed a military marker on his grave in Double Springs Cemetery in Erastus (Jackson County) NC.

A possible match for Thomas, though the last name is spelled with two 'p's.
