Wikidata - WikiTree Update

Connecting to wikidata is progressing well. We have almost 18000 profiles connected.

On this page http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Wikidata#Editing_using_Ale.C5.A1_site you have a few tables and reports created on what is connected and what can still be connected.

Very certain connections are made semi-automatically by me.

Here is extract from the page for quick links.

Editing using Aleš site

  • Report of Wikipedia links in biography Person link. (linked to a person 16x2000)
  • Report of Wikipedia links in biography Valid link. (not linked to a person 7x2000)
  • Report of Wikipedia links in biography No valid link. (linked to invalid page 0x2000)
  • Report of Wikipedia links in biography No link. (not linked 2x2000)

I'm lost on what Wikidata is for in this context. I could see locations being linked, but not people (except famous ones). I don't know that I agree with linking profile personas to another site. That seems like it could be used to take away our control. If it's just for celebrities and royalty and such then it won't be an issue for me.

What control are you talking about?

Wikidata items exists for all pages of all wikipedias and in some cases also relatives of a wikipedia's person. At the moment it is main source of wikidata. Other sites started to link their data to Wikidata and so did we. That helps to get a lot of references without using Google and searching through millions of hits.

Random example (Edward Dickinson, I took one from Wikidata template):

There are links to all wikipedias, Find a grave, genealogics.org, and others for exactly this person. That is better than google search.

Google returns a lot of Edward Dickinson's on first page

https://www.google.com/search?q=Edward+Dickinson

Control of the genealogy - details about the person and who they link to (parents and children. It is what genealogists do, and it needs to be done properly. Personally, telling me that Wikidata shows something different is of no value. I'm not doing my genealogy there and have no interest in putting time into making sure the data matches. Same is true for Ancestry and FamilySearch, but those are at least genealogy sites.
Agreed.

Wikitree is the best and where sources are documented, also most precise. But as I was connecting to wikipedia, I found 100's of errors. Most on Wikitree side, some on wikipedia and for few I couldn't tell. I already proposed a few merges and there are a lot more to come. Then Wikitree will be also most accurate.

I am still analyzing differences between two databases and deciding how to correct them. Probably new errors, that could be identified as False errors if error is on wikipedia side. This errors will aim towards improving data on wikitree.

@Mikey Anonymous

What control are you speaking about?!?!? In my opinion Wikitree must start working more with quality otherwise Wikitree is just another genealogy site you can't trust.....

Wikidata: You can have sources and references URLs but that is something WikiData can be better doing. Below Data for Place of Birth for Napoleon

Big pic

Then you have possibility to check about Napoleon in more than 70 wiki articles. To focus on quality some of those wikipedia articles has been marked as feature article eg.

en Napoleon that has +279 citations and 50+ biographic studies

compare the WikiTree article about Napoleon

>>Personally, telling me that Wikidata shows something different is of no value. I'm not doing my genealogy there and have no interest inputting time into making sure the data matches. Same is true for Ancestry and FamilySearch, but those are at least genealogy sites.

Maybe WikiTree is wrong could be a reason if you care....  In my opinion checking with Ancestry is a waste of time 99 out of 100 links to Ancestry are useless

Control - should be obvious! It's what genealogy is, info about people and how they are related. I will not accept an ancestor just because another web site says that's who it should be. I'm not impressed at all with WikiData for genealogy use, may be Ok for location etc, but not for collaborative family trees.

@Mikey feels you miss the concept of Wikidata. It is the data layer to all Wikipedia's

==> all structured data that is common in Wikipedia should in the best of worlds also be reflected in Wikidata that is machine readable and can have external links like FindAGrave, WikiTree ...

>> I will not accept an ancestor just because another web site says that wo it should be...

No one tells you to do that...Maybe someone access Wikipedia and Wikidata and find what you have done in WikiTree and is impressed of your work and can use that....

We now have in Wikidata +4000 profiles with both a WikiTree profile and A FindAGrave profile ==> could be a good place to find the FindAGrave record or other external references

Mikey,

With connecting to wikidata, i.already found over 100 duplicated notables. They came out as errors in connection routine. I made a few merges, proposed a lot more and messaged where whole branches are duplicated.

And i didnt even start to compare data and make errors of it. In some cases error is on wikipedia.

I Edit or am a member of:

wikitree.com   familysearch.org   findagrave.com   fold3.com   ancestry.com   wikipedia.org   (wikipedia.org is linked to wikidata.org)

And I use Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License (within wikipedia.org to properly Down-load (from whikpedia.org) and up-load photos & Images to WikiTree !

I use wikipedia.org / Creative Commons to get information / Sources / Photos for ( Clan Edmonstone , Military and War Project , Roll of Honor , European Aristocrats Project , Notables , One Place Studies <---- are all WikiTree Project or Sub-projects ).

My focus is to: Do what Magnus shows in his 5 color Graphic above! I bring it all to WikiTree & also spread it back out.

I don't want control... I want to FLY! ♫ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnlTrq6wLf0 ♪

It is not hard to be a Team Player. HAGD Ya'll, JPV IV :)

Cool John it's nearly a religious feeling when you start understand the benefits of linking data instead of pages....

Really good usage you get when you learn query Wikidata see G2G. Aleš has linked +21000 records between WIkitree and Wikidata and we have 5099 records with both Wikidata and FindAGrave record (on a map) and i WikiTree we have +560 profiles linking FindAGrave using the template...

There are a lot of videos and blog about the query language SPARQL and you have a query interface at

Ps. WikiTree profiles with a YouTube channel
