Would you like to join a USA midwest Source-a-Thon team?

I've been hoping to find a team to join, but none have appeared for states in the US midwest, so I'm going to bite the bullet and start one.  Let me know if you want to join.  I'm figuring on including Indiana, Ohio Kentucky and West Virginia (unless the virginia team has dibs on WV.  If there are Illinois or Michigan  people we could add them too.  I believe I'm #29 on the list. I'll be back to see who's signed up and what name suggestions we have.  If there are no other suggestions I'll make it Midwestern Hayride whic was a popular syndicated variety show back in the 1950s.

I'd like if possible for everyone on the team to post their Source A Thon ID number in their answer.  I'm going to create a database for everyone and while I'll be able to get WikiTree IDs I'll have to go through the entire list to find all the Source A Thon IDs for the Team

Here's a link to a G2G post with links to important pages: http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/302030/catch-us-if-you-can-carolina-cousins

Awesome, Dave! When you have the scope settled, or mostly settled, post again and I'll make sure it's added to http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Source-a-Thon_Teams

Hi!

The West Virginia Project is pretty robust, and I had thought it might field a team. Team Virginia has a couple of teammates interested in Virginia counties that later became West Virginia counties. But I think that folks wanting to source West Virginia profiles could join either team. Because Team Virginia covers Virginia "anywhen," there will be overlap with other teams for states that were formed from counties that were once Virginia counties. So long as the profiles get sourced, it's all good :D

Cheers, Liz

P.S. For a table with links to the VA & WV county categories for the 50 Virginia counties that became West Virginia in 1863, [click here].

And I forgot to include a shameless plug for Team Virginia! See the [Team Virginia page] or [click here to join us].

Cheers, Liz

Dave, it looks like you're starting to get team members. Why don't you give your team a name and we'll get you added to the list of teams on the Source-a-thon Teams page. You can just edit this question to reflect your name and invitation to join, as it looks like people are already starting to respond here. Thanks!

I've added your team to the list as Team Midwest, Dave. Be sure to answer your own post here so you're set to start sourcing this weekend!

                      Source-a-Thon 2016

                          TEAM Midwest

                           (Please Read)

Thank you for your participation in the first ever Source-a-Thon. Your contributions will improve the quality of our global collaborative tree. See the official Event Page for more information.

Want to join this team but don't have a Participation Number?

Go to the current Registration page and Post an Answer saying something like "Sign me up." You will be assigned a number. Then come back here and Post an Answer like "Ready to source" and add your Participation No. to that post.

Add Participation Number To Answer Post

Please add your bib / participation no. to your Answer post-contribution thread by right-clicking on the image number you received, copy it; then go to your answer post below, choose edit and select the photo icon (Formatting board, bottom row, 3rd from left), paste it into the URL text box and press OK. Now your number is in your post.

Your Answer Post Below Is Your Contribution Thread

To save time and since it was explained so well, significant portions of the following text have been duplicated and only slightly modified from the original writing of Ros Haywood, who created and captains Team GB-Gen. The duplicated and derived text is used entirely with her full permission. Thank you, Ros!

The Process

1. Select unsourced profiles from a state of your choosing in the category United States Unsourced Profiles list.

2. Complete your research and add at least one source to that profile in Edit mode. Each profile properly sourced counts as one contribution.

3. Remove the {{Unsourced}} template wording from the top of the bio on the edit page.

4. Enter what you did in the 'Explain your changes' box e.g. ‘Added marriage source’ – and save.

5. Come back to your contribution thread below, edit with the name of – and link to – the profile you have just sourced..

Profiles whose only "sources" are Find-A-Grave links, Geni, Ancestry, Rootsweb or FamilySearch trees, should not be counted as sourced. Documents or indexes with documents such as birth, marriage and death certificates, WWI draft cards or pension file docs, Social Security Death Index or census records are examples of proper sources.

Your Contribution Thread below should look like this list

Right click and copy the Profile URL of your contribution. Go to your Answer/Contribution Thread below. Click ‘edit’ on your thread. Number your entries as you go. Write out the name on the profile and add what type of source you contributed. Highlight the name. Click on the 'link' icon (Formatting board, bottom row, 1st on left). Paste the Profile URL link into the URL text box and click OK. Here is an example of the finished product:

1. Mary (Atkinson) Fisher: marriage
2. Albert Gittos: birth

How do I win door prizes?

  • As you participate, winners will be chosen at random in live Google Hangouts every couple of hours.
  • If you're participating, but are not online at the time your number is called out, winning numbers will be posted on the Door Prizes page and you will have until the next Google Hangout to claim your prize.

Have fun this Sat-Mon Oct 1-3 2016! Thank you for your valuable contributions.

Ready to Source for Illinois, thanks.
Thanks Keith. Please re-post your comment as an Answer (find the Answer link under Dave's initial question toward the top of the page) and then follow the instructions to Add your Participation Number badge you were provided. Please read the rest of the instructions in preparation for the event and you will be all set. Have fun.
Thanks, Chris.

Dave I will join, don't know how much I can help. I will be at the Newport Indiana Antique Auto Hill Climb Sept. 30, Oct. 1 & 2. I forgot about it when I signed up. I think my number was 226. I wish I wasn't busy because it sounds like fun. I live in Florida, but I'm staying at my daughters in Indiana until after the Hill Climb. Thanks for making a team!image

What a mess in my posting, just couldn't seem to find my post part of the time and another time it wouldn't let me post, said I was beyond my limit.  But I enjoyed what I could find and help out with.

I'm about to give up.  I've spent an hour trying to find out how to post the source I confirmed.  Trying to follow all these instructions has left me with more unanswered than answered questions.  I thought this would be a lot easier than I'm finding it.  I can't even find my own G2G tracking post!!!! Very frustrated.

Well, I saw your earlier attempt to put it here.  But you put it at the top of the answer father than at the end.  You can either put it either after "very Frustated"(at the start of a line, or click "comment" and enter them there.  Don't worry about making it pretty.  Just get the name and sort of source here and if necessary we'lll fix it later.
Hang in there. I'm new at this too. After you get your first one done, it gets a lot easier and then begins to roll.
You are right of course.  Thank you for letting me know I'm not alone.  I've managed to finally get a few done and posted.
