Irish Roots/Clans templates

Question

According to the Irish Roots Project page, if you don't know where in Ireland the person came from, you use the {{Irish Roots}} template to say they came from Ireland; if they have Irish heritage, you use the {{Irish Clans}} template.

So, why are Irish Roots templates being changed on profiles to Irish Clans, when the person did come from an as-yet-undetermined location in Ireland?

The issue is the templates.   If you use {{Irish Roots}} - which is possible but not desirable - it will link the person back to the category Ireland.

It you use {{Irish Clans}} it will not link the profile to the category Ireland, but will still put the shamrock graphic on the profile and a link back to the Irish Roots project page.

I know this seems confusing - we were asked not to try to "fix" these templates while discussions are ongoing as to the use of templates and project boxes.  These templates date back to older incarnations of the Irish Roots project.

Ideally we should not be linking people back to the category of Ireland itself - it does not really add anything.

To add to the mix.... you can use {{Irish Roots|location=XXX}} (with "XXX" being the location in Ireland that the person came from.

This will automatically link the person to that location category.

Please follow guidelines for Irish geographic locations if you are doing that - guidelines on how to do this can be found on the category page for each Irish County.

I hadn't realised there was a difference.   I thought both just put them in a category.  Without a place name don't they both just go to the Ireland category? (not as preferred as it clutters up the main page)

With a place name, they go to a more specific category? (preferred option)

Is there a way to find a list of the profiles with each of the templates?

It's helpful to distinguish actual emigrants from descendants, even if we don't know where in Ireland they came from.

I had thought I had asked that question before and anyone, whether in Ireland or out of Ireland who had Irish Roots got the template?

I will also update the project page to make clear {{Irish Roots}} on its own is not a preferred option unless there is a specific geographic category it links to.
