Just note that everyone does not have access to a scanner all the time and therefore can't add copies of documents immediately. Is just adding "birth certificate #xxx" or similar comments acceptable?

Yes, that's OK.  But the goal is to cite the source so that others can also find this source.  So with a birth certificate you could put the person, place, parents, document name and identifying number as well as the source of the document such as the county and/or state, national health department which issued the document and and other helpful relevant information.

Sometimes you might see on a profile a generic name of a document such as "Birth Certificate" or "Census 1920" (without any details) and those are of no help.

It's nice that you asked.  Success!
