Project participants (all except Don - I don't have your e-mail address) - please review and comment on the freespace page for Criteria - link above. It's currently private for discussion... once we're agreed on criteria, we can either make it fully open or open but only trusted list can edit - please let me know what you think of that also. Or we can open it now (either fully or without edit capability). Majority rules.

I'd like to reach concensus by Wednesday, June 19.

If you want to add someone to the trusted list so that they can particpate - or if you have the wikitree e-mail for Donald Gradeless (project participant) or Rob Ton (non-member contributor), please do add them to the trusted list.  I'll be off line till late tomorrow.

Cheers, Liz

one of Rodney's comments has led to an epiphany, and I wanted to suggest it here before changing the proposed criteria (so that commenting/discussion is easier):

instead of saying descendants (either lineal or collateral), just say "anyone born to a resident of New Netherland (1609 - October 1674)" (or as rephrased below)?

That would make the proposed critera (see the critera page for the proposed definitions and supplemental/clarifying text):

- Proposal (shooting for consensus by 6/19) -

The New Netherland Settlers project admits three main groups:

* immigrants who embarked for New Netherland no later than October 1674 from the United Provinces of the Netherlands, including Dutch colonies (regardless of where they were born), provided they settled in New Netherland upon arrival

* immigrants who were born in the United Provinces of the Netherlands, including Dutch colonies, and embarked for New Netherland (regardless of port) no later than October 1674, provided they settled in New Netherland upon arrival

* anyone born no later than October 1674 to a New Netherland settler

(If you haven't already, you might also want to distinguish what geographical area included "New Netherland")
Jillaine - Yup, working on that. The need for that's listed on the criteria page (with a request for a volunteer). Could you not see the page? (Even though you're not a member, I'd meant to add you to the trusted list - your advice is greatly appreciated!!)
Jillaine - I hadn't added you, but I have now. Sorry!
I like how the criteria is defined now. very clear.

I have added several of the immigrants I have tracked;

Louwrens, Pieterse de Norman

Sutphen, Dirck J.

Van Cleef, Jan

Van Mater, Jan Gysbertsen
Van Mater, Kreijn J.

But I have only added the template to the immigrant and not any of the descendants yet. My question about this is what descents do we add the template too?
Hi Kari - I think the answer is in definitions. I just redid the criteria page for final review. If the answer's not there, we need to change it! I'm signing off for the night, but I'll check in tomorrow.

Liz,

I think these criteria are much more parsimonious!!!

Kudos to you!

Thanks... although I must admit you made me look (for the definition of parsimonious: Excessively sparing or frugal).  Hmm.  you said it like a good thing, so this retired editor will interpret it to mean that I was concise :D

Cheers, Liz

ooh ooh - kept looking and found it meant similar to Occam's Razor:

principle of using the least resources or explanations to solve a problem

Thanks so much! That's what I was going for cheeky

It is interesting that I was first going to reference Occam's Razor, but I thought that would be too obtuse of a reference.  Hence, I chose parsimony.  cheeky
