October 2016 Sourcerers Challenge! [closed]

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Source-a-thon the past few days!! This has made a huge contribution to WikiTree!

This month is slightly unique for how we will keep track of sources--if you participated in the source-a-thon, please pick up your count where you left off (if you did 50 profiles in the source-a-thon, then start at 51 here). You do NOT need to copy and paste your previous profile count here, just to limit clutter.

The sources you all are adding are superb. Remember, your sources need to be as fully and specifically as possible, so others find them useful. That means, if there is a link to the work mentioned, you must include it. If it is a page from a book, the page needs to be included so others can easily see where you found the reference. 

We can also do a bit more while adding sources, like clean up the gedcom leftovers or help the formatting from older profiles. Sources are important, but if you can't find them among all the other stuff, they aren't helping as much as they could.

Onto October's challenge:

You only need to answer the post once, and just edit your post to add your new profiles, continuing in a comment on your answer as necessary. Please number your contributions (a number every ten or hundred works just fine). It helps us tally at the end of the month much faster. See last month's challenge for examples.

* All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories  or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced-you cannot create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the numbers already on WikiTree that need sources. Adding sources will help merges happen, too, which will improve our tree. Showing folks what sources you're using helps newer researchers see just what's available out there for us to access. Another great source of unsourced profiles is to check out orphaned profiles.

* The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added. That said, if you can add a number of sources to a profile, all the better. Maybe we'll switch things up and see how many sources added y'all can do one month.

* If you attempt to add sources to a profile and just cannot find any, please add a note under a section like == Research Notes == giving where you tried to find records and you can sign it with the four tildes (~~~~) so the date is applied as well. Something like "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry" would be fine. Or, "Searched google for an obituary and didn't find one." That way the next researcher knows where to start.

* If the only source on a profile is "Ancestry tree" or "Geni.com" it can count as unsourced, and you can add better sources to it to count in your tally.

* If you find a match and can merge a profile into an already sourced profile, that counts, too. You still found a source, plus you eliminated a duplicate. Awesome!

We are now actively in our normal October Challenge, which will run through October 31st. Ask any questions here in the thread, otherwise, SOURCE!

If I am not sure that the source I'm using is correct (common name, only a first name for spouse, common children's names, no locations, estimated dates, etc.) I add a research note with the links to possible sources, but state that more information will be needed to confirm. That's why I 'cheat' when sourcing; I tend to pick unusual names off the list in hopes of finding a few good sources rather than a bunch that I may not be able to use. So far I've managed to not make anyone mad (that I know of) but we all make mistakes, and some people feel very proprietary of their profiles. Personally, I love it when someone pretties up a profile for me (because I suck with templates and images), finds me a source, points out something (in a constructive way) that I have done incorrectly, because I need to learn.

Great conversation!!

Something you might consider doing if the profile has been worked on recently is to post a note on the public comments with the information for the source you want to add. Then the Profile Manager can add it in as they see fit.

If you run across someone who is upset because you're improving a profile, and you know your information is accurate, you can politely point them to the Honor Code. If things don't settle down after that, please be sure to use the Problems with Members link on the Help menu.

We don't want anyone to feel like they are alone in a difficult situation.

I can't wait to see the total sourced profiles this month.  First, the number of people contributing is almost double the usual amount.  Second, the source a thon will be included in the totals.   Third, scrolling through to find my own list, I am seeing many contributions in the 200 and more categories and we still have one week more to go.  Great going everyone.

If you are looking for profiles to source, I just found 787 Last Name GODING.  At least half of them are unsourced and probably a third are in there twice and need merging.  HELP!

I have found that this works well.  Some of the profiles are not open, but have no sources.  I add the link to the source in the comments to the profile manager, asking them to review the source and add if it meets their approval. I also encourage them to update the bio with the information provided.  I know encouragement meant a lot to me when I first came to WikiTree.  Every little bit helps, don't ya think?

We've had high winds, rain and lost power about 4:30.Thank God for generators and gasoline. Matthew has moved on past us and we'll spend a few days chain-sawing debris out of the yard. We've been very lucky.

Wow, sounds like you've had it a lot worse than what we got. Just lots of rain and some pretty good wind gusts here but over all just standard tropical storm. Stay safe.

Hey Debi (Hoag), I've seen people in other Projects put together a Free-Space profile with all of their personal recommended links, methods, and advice.  You could share your information that way, and you won't have to repeat yourself month after month.  Just an idea!  :-)

Why can I not add more than 8000 cahracters when I am listing my progress?  I have had to start the third list now.  Any ideas?

Dang!  I have been sitting here for an hour and a half trying to find profiles to source and either can't find sources or someone else has already tried (Debi Hoag!)

As I said earlier, I was spinning my wheels for over an hour and a half trying to find a profile to improve. Most of the ones I pulled up had your research notes on them saying nothing was found.  Excellent work!

I have come across profiles with that posted. But I have tried searching anyway, and have come up with some good sources, maybe by running a wife's name, but using her married name instead of her maiden, and lucking up on a source that gave her maiden name and husbands name.  With that extra info, I know I am working on the right person.  I don't run a marathon, but I am making some head way. Thanks for all the notes and hints, it all adds up to make sourcing and improving profiles, and that is what this is about.

Ohhhh. Some of my sources had family members who were not in the tree. So, it's okay to go back and tidy up the tree? I included the data in the biography.

I found more than one family fouled up; can I tidy that up?

When y'all say tidy up Gedcom clutter, does that mean "get rid of it?" I didn't know what to do with Gedcom and I started a separate section with my data and sources. Figured I'd ask for details after the race.

I also added two sources if possible (not junk like Ancestry tree) to support that the person I was sourcing matched the data to the most reasonable degree of certainty.  Does all of this sound reasonable?

Definitely feel free to tidy up or source anything you find along the way! The main goal of the sourcerers project is to source profiles, of course, but we will never turn down cleaning up profiles or cleaning up a branch. Thank you for your contributions!

What system are you guys using to keep the list of those you've sourced?

Is there a magical area of WT? Or are you using a spreadsheet or word doc?

This was my first time doing a sourcerers challenge. I'm sure I sourced some w out the {{unsourced}} and counted them.
