I have a person listed on the 1850 census in South Carolina as an Overseer, does anyone know what occupation that is?

An Overseer was the individual who supervised the day to day workings of a plantation, including all work performed by any slaves owned by the plantation owner.  You can check the 1850 slave schedule to see the list of slave owners and the number of slaves owned.  There is also an 1860 slave schedule.  The 1850 and 1860 slave schedules will only be for slave holding states and will be broken down by county.
