Since Helgoland became German only in 1890 I don't know specifics about vital records from the British time, but perhaps the Standesamt Helgoland can direct you to 1881 birth records, Their email is standesamt‎@gemeinde-helgoland.de

The Standesamt is the registrar's office and the website contains directions about obtaining documents in a very general way. The relevant section is this:

I received a friendly email reply from Hans Peter Voss to my letter enquiring about the kirche records today and copy below. Not sure if you can take anything more from this than that written in English but it may help in the general understanding about how limited the Island records are for parts of their history. Very sad I think.

because of the WW-II. a very lot of church books are destroyed or lost.

The records of HELGOLAND:

 

Baptismal records are lost from 1838 up to 1912.

Marriage records are lost from 1812 up to 1897

Burials are lost from 1823 up to 1899.

This is very unfortunate as you would have to reconstruct at least 2 more generations from other sources until you could reconnect with existing church books. Unless there are British records somewhere since the island was British for the time concerned.

Hi Maureen - I found a number of David Schramms in Germany 1881 birth records but I need more info to narrow it down. Names of some family members would help and anything else you know.

Between 1807 and 1890 Helgoland was British, before that Danish. Don't know if German records for that time would list Helgoland births.

Thank you Patricia. I only have note that his father was named John Schramm. David was a Mariner. Lived in Hull. Had 9 children. Married Harriet Carrell Pounsbury. He died 1st June 1905 in Hull workhouse

I was very excited to get some suggestions about Helgoland records being possible for my great-grandfather and nearly got myself in a muddle. I am trying to follow up advice received from Helmut Jungschaffer now. I have also found a note I made some time ago with no reference (I wion't do that again now I've learned the hard way) Anyway, I noted that John Schramm was a mason. Really not sure that is right but could be a clue.

I would be very interested to have any of the details you discovered about David Schramms. Would the German records relate to residents of Helgoland do you know please?
