I've just checked FreeBMD and the censuses. Can't find any reference to him. Do you have any more info.?

He's my great great grandfather, was in the Royal Marines as a ships carpenter. Later life he lived in Portsmouth. He was an only child but had 4 or 5 children, He died and is buried in Portsmouth
OK, found him. Death registered June 1891 aged 81.

I'll let you know what else I find.

OK, here he is in 1851 in Hove.

James 42, wife Harriet 41 born Houghton, Sussex. James 14, Alfred 12, William 11, Harried 9, Louisa 6 (all born Portsmouth), Emma 2, Ellen 4 months (both born Brighton).

In 1891 shortly before his death he was living with his daughter Harriet (Burns) in Portsea.

That should give you plenty to look for as descendants of those children.
