Looking for proof regarding parents of John Leroy Fullerton b. 1896 Dubois, PA [closed]

Trying to verify parents of John Leroy Fullerton b. 27 May 1896 in DuBois, Pennsylvania. Unable to locate any records before WWI draft 1917. VA marriage record shows parents as Harry B. Fullerton & Clara Mason. Does not show up on any census before 1920. Family history is that John's father did not wish to care for another dependant & was sent to live with other relatives. He never spoke of his father to later family which only deepens the difficulty in gathering info. Speculation was that this may have been when his mother died. There is a Harry B. & Clara Mason in Dubois, PA during this time but he does not show up on the 1900 census with them. Any help appreciated.

closed with the note: Exciting update! My cousin got her DNA results & a 2nd cousin connection was listed for her. This was actually a “stranger” I’d been contacting for awhile trying to prove our connection. The DNA convinced him I wasn't that crazy. He started asking his family a few questions, discovered an aunt had kept a handwritten list of family members & there it was… the connection I've been trying to find for 14 years. She confirmed he was indeed the youngest son of Harry & Clara, even remembering they had moved to VA! I still want to find some documentation from the first 21 yrs of his life, but at least I now know I'm not barking up the wrong family tree! Thanks to all y'all for being so helpful!

Thanks for responding! I am specifically looking for information/documentation before 1917. I am unable to locate any proof connecting him to the parents (Harry B. & Clara Mason) listed on his marriage registration or that he existed between his birth year 1896 and his WWI draft registration in 1917. He seems to have not existed on paper for the first 21 years of his life...

I found a 1900 census with a Fullerton family in DuBois, Clearfield, PA.

"United States Census, 1900," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11867-132185-50?cc=1325221 : 5 August 2014), Pennsylvania > Clearfield > ED 70 Dubois borough Ward 1 > image 13 of 70; citing NARA microfilm publication T623 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).

Here's what it says:

Name Role Age Birth Month Birth Year Mom's Birthplace Dad's Birthplace
Harry Fullerton Head 52 Feb 1848 PA, USA PA, USA
Clarra Fullerton Wife 54 Jan 1846 PA, USA PA, USA
Nelly Fullerton Daughter 17 May 1883 PA, USA PA, USA
A Fullerton Son 15 Jul 1884 PA, USA PA, USA
Chas Fullerton Son 13 Dec 1886 PA, USA PA, USA
Truman Fullerton Son 8 Sep 1891 PA, USA PA, USA
Dorothy Fullerton Daughter 6 Apr 1894 PA, USA PA, USA

At this point, if John Leroy Fullerton was their son, he'd be 4 years old... and likely in the census. Also says that Clarra and Harry wed in 1880, have been married for 20 years.

If Harry B Fullerton is the same as Harrison B Fullerton, his death certificate is on Ancestry. He died April 26, 1915 in... Lawrence? Township in Clearfield county of PA. Death certificate is 34074. If so, I do believe this is their Find a Grave page.

There is also a tree on Ancestry that references a book currently not available online that maybe your library could get in. "The Fullertons of North America, Volume 2, Part C" by Gordon W. Fullerton, Jr.. 8th Edition, Published by Polynesian Dynamics, Honolulu, Hawaii, 1999. It's cited as a source for the marriage. Said family tree also does NOT list a John Leroy Fullerton as one of the children.

EDIT: If you want to really find out who John LeRoy Fullerton is, I'd suggest getting one of your mother's brother's sons - if any exist - to do a Y-DNA test and possibly an autosomal DNA test. Emphasis on the Y-DNA. Y-DNA is passed from father to son.

Thanks for responding! I know pretty much everything about my John Leroy Fullerton except who his parents were & who actually raised him. As I mentioned in my original post, family rumor is he was sent away, raised by others (possibly family members) & never spoke of his parents. The only reference I have been able to find were the parents listed on his 1956 (2nd) marriage record. I wondered if maybe he had listed Harry/Clara as "parents" on his marriage record with the possibility they had raised him (maybe an uncle/aunt) but that would not explain his lack of census records? Unless you could easily just not mention kids in your home, which I guess you could. I poked a lot at the "other" Harrison/Clara and between the 1870, 1880 & 1900 census, they have 12 kids listed with no mention of my ggf. I can't seem to find him proof of him existing on paper before his WWI draft in 1917. I have been corresponding with a relative of the Harrison B you mention above on Ancestry, but have not been able to find anything. Again, thanks so much for your response & suggestions!
