Branch of Radford family, Holbrook, Derbyshire

Question

Seeking to clarify our Radford family history in Holbrook, Derbyshire after some success.  A great aunt Millicent Sarah Radford born13.10.1881  sadly died at 47 in a terrible train crash in Charfield, Gloc on 13.10.1928 which will have been notable locally - we are primarily interested in our maternal grand-father Francis Edward Radford 1890 - 3.8.1953 who may have been estranged from his father in his lifetime (to 1922) and lived in County Durham.

Thanks, Martin.  I want to clarify if John Radford of 'Oakdene' Holbrook Derbyshire (d 1922) is the father of my maternal grand-father (gf) Francis Edward Radford (1890 - 3.8.53) from Holbrook. The 1920 will of John Radford (possible mat g-gf) cites some children's names that are known to us as great aunts/uncles but FER is not there and a couple of the children's names (who would be FER's sibs) are not known to us.  The timing of the will and the marriage of FER and birth of his child (my mother) and his own family's more modest social and employment standing suggest he may have been disowned.  The census data support this interpretation but there are many Radfords through Holbrook over time and I want to avoid false trails.  I wondered if anyone has already got anything on John Radford of Oakdene d 1922.  More work to do in local history library but the website seemed too good an opportunity to miss. The 1891 census is pretty clear.

John 41 (b. Holbrook), Sarah J(?) wife (b. Hathern, Leics.), children Ruth E 10, John D 8, Alfred G 6,  Ernest W 4, Francis E 1.

First two children born Derby. The rest born Sutton Bonington, Notts.

That matches the 1911 census in "Oakdene".

Thanks Martin.  I need to cross-check quite thoroughly on this as even different branches of East Midlands Radfords used quite a small pool of Christian names.  Any local Radford information would help clarify further.

The Millicent clinches it for me. There are really no other possibilities to mix it up with.
