I am trying to find on-line what my grandfather Sydney Gregory did on foot, tracing his people back to Rob Roy.

It's  hard to answer a question like this. As I understand it, you have a family story that your GREGORY family in Yorkshire was originally a McGregor from  Scotland?  That is entirely possible, but the only way to establish if it's true, and when it happened is to go backwards generation by generation until (hopefully) you find the ancestor who made the change. Best of luck.
