Voortman-24

I have been searching for more information on Jan Voortman, husband of Gerritjen Kolkman. Only record, thus far, of his parents show his father was Jan Voortman and mother was Janna Voortmans.

I can not read or speak the language, making finding information difficult. Using google translate is my only tool.  I Have found information online indicating his name is Jan Holmer, married to Janna Moespot. In other places, I find his partner is Harmina Moespot and spouse is Janna Moespot. A son, named Jan Willem Holmer.

Is there any significance to how his name is listed?  Jan Voortman-Holmer or Jan Voortman (Holmer).

Thank you for any help.  Tami

Jan Holmer, resident of Bathmen marries Johanna Moespot, resident of Epse, in May 1799 (See this record image 24)

In 1835 a Jan Holmer (alias Voortman) baptized at Verwolde on 4 Dec 1774, son of Jan Holmer and Henders Schutten, and widower of Janna Moespot marries Harmina Moespot... presumably Janna is the Johanna from the previous record. (see this record image 266).

more to follow tomorrow (unless someone beats me to it)

I also don't speak Dutch, but after dealing with 1000's of records I am not too bad at recognizing the most common and useful information.
I am going to try and walk through the process as I go.... including going through the sources on the profile (hopefully not too painful if I rehash it)

Starting with the death registration (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-11537-26523-72)
Akte 67: On the 16th September, 1879 at Olst, Jan van den Noordt, age 36 years, [occupation] day laborer and Egbert (Beltinan?), age 29 years, [occupation] farmer both residents of Olst reported that Jan Voortman, age 77 years, day labourer, husband of Gerritjen Kolkman, no occupation, resident of  Olst; widower of Maria Klein Oonk; son of Jan Voortman and Janna Voortmans, both decease; born Gorssel, resident of Olst died on the 16th of the month at Wesepe, municipality of Olst, number 14

Next the basic data about Jan given in his marriage to Gerritjen: (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-11538-76445-19)
Jan Voortman, age 42 years, occupation farmer, widow of Maria Klein Oonk, deceased at Olst, over "age of majority", son of Jan Voortman, farmer, [resident] of Deventer and Janna Voortmans deceased, baptised at Deventer and resident of Olst

The supporting documents to this marriage in the Huwelijksbijlagen for 1845, akte 13 (starts at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19193-9013-61): first document is an extract of the birth register for Gerritjen, second document is the extract of the death register for Maria Klein Oonk, third is the extract of the marriage of Jan and Maria Klein, and fourth is the extract of the baptism 8 August 1802 for Jan, son of Jan Voortman and Janna Voortmans of Epse.

Next the basic data about Jan in his marriage to Maria Klein: (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/DGS-004524624_00161)
Jan Voortman, day labourer, age 33 years, born and residing in this [Gorssel] municipality at Epse, over "age of majority", zon of the day labourer Jan Voortman, age 60 years, resident of Epse and Janna Voortmans (also known as Moespot), deceased.

The supporting documents to this marriage 1836, akte 2 (starts at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-17535-83558-23): document 1. cover page; document 2. certificate of militia service (gives a physical description of Jan in the left margin); document 3. I believe this is the certificate confirming that the impending marriage had been announced at Bathmen on the 10th and 17th of January (marriages were published/announced in the towns of both the prospective bride and groom); document 4, extract of Jan's baptism at Deventer; document 5, extract of the birth record of Maria Klein; Document 5; proof of death of Jan's mother Janna Moespot on 24 Mar 1809.

The baptismal record for Jan dated 8 Aug 1802 offers nothing additional to everything above: Parents recorded as Jan Voortman and Janna Voortmans of Epse.

Confirming the death of Jan's mother, we find the burial of Janna Moespot on 27 March 1809 at Almen (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-32990-4726-55) gives age 40 years, lived at Epse, was married, had children, and date of death 24 Mar 1809

So now we know that Jan's mother, Janna Voortmans was also known as Janna Moespot, that she was born about 1769, died in 1809, and was buried at Almen. We also know that Jan's father Jan was born about 1776 (based on being age 60 in 1836) and that he died after 1845 (then living at Deventer) and before 1879.

All of the above information makes it pretty certain that Jan (the elder) is the death registered 26 Jan 1856 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/DGS-004524630_00114) The death occured at Epse, on 24 Jan 1856, of Jan Voortman, day labourer, resident of the "Katerstede de Voort" in the village of Epse, most recently widower of Harmina Moespot and also widower of Janna Moespot; born at Laren, Son of Jan Voortman alias Holmer, and Henders Schutten.

So now we are back to the 27 Feb 1835 marriage of Jan Holmer and Harmina Moespot, already mentioned (Link to the FamilySearch copy: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/DGS-004524624_00131):

Jan Holmer, also named Voortman, widow of Janna Moespot, of occupation day labourer, age sixty years, born in municipality of Verwolde and living in the municipality of Gotssel, over age of majority, son of Jan Holmer and Henders Schutten both deceased at Verwolde. A summary of the supporting information is given at the bottom of the record.

So back to the Huweilijksbijlagen (starting at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-17535-85448-34):
1. cover page; 2. extract of birth of Jan at Verwolde (Lochem) 4 Dec 1774, son of Jan Holmer and Henders Schutten; 3. extract of 9 Mar 1777 baptism at Deventer for Harmina Moespot, daughter of Derk Moespot and Maria Lammers; 4. extract of death of Janna Moespot (same burial record cited in the marriage of Jan the younger); 5. extract of the death of father Jan Holmer, 2 nov 1817 at Verwolde; 6. proof of death of Henders Holmer in 1809 (married name of Henders Schutten); 7 . extract of death of Harmina's father; 8. proof of death of Harmina's mother; 8-10. I believe this is the dispensation for Jan to marry his step-sister.

The Verwolde burial on 8 Sep 1809 of Henders Holmer extracted above (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-33002-16054-53) offers no additional detail.

The Death of father Jan Holmer (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/DGS-004525069_00145) offers little more, except that he was reported as 92 years of age when he died in 1817, giving calculated birth of 1725. (I suspect this age may be exagerrated)

Continuing backwards, the 1799 marriage of Jan Holmer and Johanna Moespot only gives us a date, and where each resided (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-32998-7529-68)

Anyways..... returning to your original question, my interpretation of the records is that Jan Voortman who first married Maria Klein Oonk, and secondly married Gerritjen Kolkman, was the son of Jan Holmer and Johanna Moespot who both (for whatever reason) used the alias "Voortman" and Jan was secondly married to Harmina Moespot.

Ron, thank you for checking all the information and confirming the identities of Jan and Janna. Searching for missing pieces to the family puzzle is not only interesting, but very addicting. Again, thank you for your help!
