I found this but there is no proof so you can use it as a clue and do further research.  I'm not sure if this means she was previously married to someone with surname Paul or what??  I did note that on one of the early Canadian census's that they lived next door to people named Paul.  More research is definitely required on this one.

good luck!!

Hi J,

Do either Francis or Mary Ann have a WikiTree profile? It helps if we can see what you already have and what you don't. The 1871 Census shows the couple, with dates of birth so I assume you have that, and the birth/marriage/death records for Alexander and other children which supply the surname Quigley.  The 1871 Census also indicates she was Irish.

In 1838, Michael Quigley, a fisherman of of Ketch Harbour had a family that included a female under the age of six. (https://novascotia.ca/archives/census/returns1838.asp?ID=4852) That puts him in the neighborhood at the time she was born, so you might want to research this family.

During this period, there was a wave of immigrants from Ireland. A lot of the records are not digitized, so you might find more if you visit the Nova Scotia Archives in Halifax.

There was (and still is) a Charitable Irish Society of Halfax (http://www.charitableirishsocietyofhalifax.ca/) that may (or may not) have a member who is familiar with these records.

I hope you find them!
