Carl Ernst Lindner from US to Australia approx 1889

Question

Hi,
I'm looking for a relative of german decent Carl Ernst Lindner (first name is probably Ernst) who emigrated with his family from Germany to the US, New Jersey area (1880-1881). But later on, the info is that he on his own emigrated to Australia approx 1889. I have no experience looking into australian records, does anyone have info on Ernst or any idea on searchable records online (nothing found on FS).

He might have anglified (?) his name, Ernest, like his brother did with Carl=Charles. (A nightmare having two brothers named the same!) More info in his profile.

Trove (the newspaper archive) comes up with several Carl and Ernst (Ernest) Linder's. Looking into obituaries, etc, they (or their direct ancestors) all seem to have come to South Australia from Prussia, some moving interstate.

There are several ports he could have entered by, but the most common were Sydney (New South Wales) or Melbourne(Victoria). I checked the NSW records and found these two marriages, which could relate to your relative:

There was no Ernst/Ernest in the death records but there were three Carl/Charles

I have done a search of all South Australian records for Immigration, Births, Deaths, Marriages, Cemeteries and Newspaper Notices but can find no record of Ernst Carl Lindner or derivatives of the name. I may have missed something.

We have a large German descendent community in SA, and Lindner is a very common name, because the Barossa Valley Wine Region was settled by German people escaping Religious persecution in the 1800's so I thought there may be a link there but sorry, no success.

Nothing on http://www.ryersonindex.org/ which covers Newspaper notices for the whole of Australia. Trust you get your answers.
