The surname Lane is common enough and widespread enough through the British Isles for it to have several origins. The net confirms this. It could be as simple as someone who lived near a lane or pathway, (meaning that it might come from more than one location) or it could be an anglicisation of one of several Irish names. The only way you will find the origin for your Lanes is to go backwards towards the oldest holder of the name on your line, or a near descendant. Hopefully you will find your origins.
