Where have the old IGI Parish Registers gone?

Question

Some years ago, when I wasn't very worried about proper sources!, I found a baptism record for Elizabeth Deal, Deal-1036, in the IGI Parish Registers. It quoted a date of 13 January 1809, father Thomas Deal and mother Martha, at Plympton St. Mary, near Plymouth, Devon, England. Now, I cannot find anything to verify this information. Where should I be looking?

PS I'm learning why good references are so important.

I take it that when you say "It" is still available, you are referring to the IGI Parish Records and not the specific record of Elizabeth Deal's baptism.

They are still there but I can't find your Elizabeth

(but actually they should be found in the normal search process and end up being called "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," )

 

Some of the old IGI entries were user submitted, these are to be found on family search under 'genealogies' but I can't find her there either. I have a feeling that they have pruned these records.

Thanks David, didn't know about this back door approach. Unfortunately, it still searches on the same database which doesn't include the record I'm chasing.

The Hugh Wallis batch numbers list doesn't have a transcribed batch for Plympton St Mary covering 1809, so it was probably a user contrib.  Which doesn't explain why it's not still there.

The 1616-1812 batch listed on the LDS wiki page is on the wrong page, it's for Plympton Earl, aka Plympton St Maurice.

FamilySearch has an extract from FMP, and they do show the 1807 baptism (with no useful details) but not the 1809. 

The LDS may have the scanned images that FMP did the indexing from.

Thanks RJ, yes I think that is the record on the FMP site. 1809, baptism, Plympton St Mary which is missing from FamilySearch. I'll have to find a library with a FMP licence to track it down further but at least you have given me a strong lead to get to it. Thanks again, much appreciated.

FamilySearch has Devon Parish Registers and Bishops Transcripts BUT,

they are not completely indexed.

Go to the list of all collections at https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list

put Devon in the box at upper left and it will bring up links the the 2 collections. Ignore the search boxes and start browsing the images.

NOTE: Sorry about this - the parish registers are only available at a Family History Centre. I've run into this restriction before with the Kent registers. The county wants to be paid for access.

Thanks Rosemary, I didn't know the images were directly viewable, albeit at a Family History Centre. Add that to the list for my next (first!) visit to a Family History Centre.

If worst comes to worst and they aren't available at your Family History Centre you can always (shudder) get the film sent to the FHC and start viewing them on film. The trouble I've had with viewing film is that the newer film is high reduction (64x) and my local FHC's can only read 32x and 16x film. The lens for 64x costs a bundle.

Thanks for that Rosemary. Unfortunately, there is no FHC here in Broome, Western Australia. I'll have to wait till I get to Darwin which is 1800 km away. That's just how it is doing genealogy while on the road.!
