Can the Category "East Camp" be added to Columbia County, New York

+5 votes

East Camp and West Camp are towns, on opposite sides of the Hudson River,  where the German Palatines landed, in the early 1700's.

There is already Category named ''West Camp'' added as a town in Ulster County, New York. Can a new category be created in Columbia County called "East Camp"

Thank You

I don't believe that East Camp (a place where Palatine immigrants were impounded) exists as an official modern place name. I'm not sure it was thought of historically as Columbia County (which wasn't created until 1793, if memory serves), but it's geographically in the county, and it deserves a category.

To create a new category:

  1. Create a profile for a person who fits in the category.
  2. Add your proposed category to that profile. In this case, that would be [[Category: East Camp, New York]]
  3. Go to the public page for the profile and click on the red link for the category that doesn't exist yet.
  4. Go down to the edit box on the page that opens up, and insert the code for the parent category for the new category. In this case, that would be [[Category: Columbia County, New York]]. Below that, you can also add a description, and links to resources. The newspaper story is one candidate for a resource. Based on that article, I think that East Camp is in the modern town of Germantown, so the Germantown category should also be listed as a parent category.

I would hope there would also be some kind of historical category related to the Palatine arrivals, which would also be a parent category to both East Camp and West Camp.
