I have ruled out the Alfred Chapman b. 1856 who is black (parental birthplace and photographic evidence don't match -- he was white). His death certificate from 1929 only says mother born in Virginia, father born in Kentucky (no names or dates). I know that by 1895 he was in Colorado, working in the mining industry, and during those years married Malinda Reynolds from PA. They had a son Paul born in Colorado in 1901, and by 1909 had moved to Ferry County WA and had another son born there (Francis). Burnett was Alfred's middle name, and his son Paul also had Burnett as a middle name, so I'm suspecting a family name connection there as well.I really want to at least suss out his parents' names, as they are the only blanks at this point in my family tree.

The 1880 US Census shows an A.B. Chapman, a 24 year old lode miner was living in Breckenridge, Summit, Colorado.  The record shows that he was born in Washington, D.C., and that his father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Virginia.("United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MFDK-6PQ : 14 July 2016), A B Chapman in household of Mrs A Taylor, Breckenridge, Summit, Colorado, United States; citing enumeration district ED 106, sheet 422B, family 4188965, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 0093; FHL microfilm 1,254,093.)

In 1870, Alfred B. Chapman, 13 b. Wash., DC, lived in Washington Ward 7, Wash., DC., with parents Jno. G. Chapman, a 31 year old gardener b. Germany, and mother Fanny L., 24 b. Virginia.("United States Census, 1870," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MN4S-BQH : 17 October 2014), Alfred B Chapman in household of Jno G Chapman, District of Columbia, United States; citing p. 60, family 439, NARA microfilm publication M593 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 545,625.)

The 1880 Census Report from Colorado seems to fit the facts of the case.  It does, however, say he was born in Washington, D.C.  If the birth in Washington, D.C., is correct then the 1870 Census Report might also be correct.

The 1910 and 1920 Census Reports from Ferry County, Washington, are definitely those of Alfred B. and Malinda (though the 1910 reports lists her name as "Lena."  We are still missing the 1860 and 1900 reports.  Alfred died in Ferry County, Washington in 1929, so his name wouldn't be listed in the 1930 Census.

Lisa, Have you checked his Washington Death Certificate?
Thank you David -- I have seen the census reports that you mentioned and all of them do line up with facts I had already, so I feel that they are correct. His death certificate listed his birthplace as Virginia, so that's what I was going on there, but I was encouraged by finding Jno G and Fanny (just the Germany part didn't match his death certificate, stating his father was born in Kentucky......but who knows who was giving the information at the time of the death certificate? Maybe they didn't know.....) Thank you for confirming the info for me!
Thank you Vic -- yes, the death certificate was my first piece of information as to his parents. One of the census reports confirmed that, but then another promising one has a father born in Germany.....but as I told David in another comment here, who knows who gave the information on the death certificate? Maybe there was misinformation. We might not ever know. But thank you for your efforts in confirming some of my information!
