While starting my own Thanksgiving preparations, it occurred to me that there is one item on the menu that I know is at least 4 generations old, and perhaps unusual: dates stuffed with hard sauce. This originated with my Cape Cod Fish family from what I can gather. Did the dates first come in by ship with one of the whaling seamen? Was it a local tradition, or a family one? I wish I knew! (If anyone from a Cape family also has this on the traditional menu, I'd love to know.)
Does your family's menu have an unusual item, not one from, say one of the women's magazines in the 50's, but probably much further back?
