Integrating categories for One_Name and DNA Project

I want to invest my time making a clear presence in WikiTree for my One_Name and DNA projects. I have been seeking advice in both the DNA category and the Project/One_Name category. Before I proceed, I want to get the foundation right. Under the One_Name_Studies category I have a sub-category Beasley Name Study. I have a Space page for Beasley Genealogy Project. I have a Space page for Beasley DNA. I want to have a single point of entry where I can sub-categorize and organize communication and collaboration. I ended up with these two pages because I was following the instructions for both One_Name and DNA. I was getting advice from some good people who know more about one or the other but not both AND setting up categorization. I've been trying to learn the linking and categorization system but keep going around in circles. I thought about just renaming one of them Beasley One Name and DNA or something like that, but not sure how where it should live and how it should connect with both. I notice that the One_Name page is limited to three name variations, while the DNA page is not. I need to declare at least four standard variations.

I have a structure in mind using Y-Haplotype categories, etc. I'm eager to move forward but need this guidance so I can get the basics in place and invite the potential collaborators to join.

Take a look at our (Doug & Mine) Project page and see what we did It all seems logical and it works for us. There are several sir-names there we are working with.and they all have there "One Name Study" and DNA study.

I hope someone experienced with categorization will step forward to help Doug. I think the end result will help all Wikitree members break through some of their brick walls.

Doug, I did not realize there is a 3 variant limit for surnames(I can't find it written anywhere). In any case, I see no reason why you can't use 4 variants.

I would, but there are only three spaces and I don't see a provision for adding any. Maybe I missed something.
I want to add, Mr. Lockwood, that I've posed these questions to you and you've been very considerate, acknowledging your limitations in the categorization process and making a point of passing my questions on to others. I appreciate that. I'm just trying to nudge for a response from some "others" whoever they may be... busy people all, I'm sure. I'd also like to credit [[Roberts-7085|Peter Roberts]] for being helpful on the DNA side for his help, though he admits to limited experience on the One-Name side.

Doug,

I do not think that anyone has addressed this problem -

I developed this solution for some Patterson DNA information

Category: Patterson Name Study

Category: Patterson 3 Way DNA Confirmation

Rice Palmer Patterson 3 Way DNA Confirmation

As you can see all of the DNA information is documented in a Free Space - it is a sub cat for a category for Patterson 3 Way DNA which is a sub cat for the Patterson Name Study, a sub cat of One Name Studies.

I have not seen anyone else trying to work on this problem but I think this works as it gives a place to provide full documentation of the DNA results and incorporates the material into the One Name Studies which seems like it needs to the the higher level category.  You will note that the note for DNA confirmation is shown in the Free Space and is also on the profile of each individual and their ancestors for which the DNA confirmation relates.  All of the links should be live.

Thank you, Phillip. It doesn't surprise me that this is a work in progress. I don't mind that. I just want some best practice suggestions and I'm willing to help with the discussion. As I search through related questions and issues, I see items that may be 2-3 years old. What I really want to find, is the most up-to-date knowledgeable discussion. I even found an outside discussion group (Google groups, maybe?) that included many WikiTree people. I couldn't tell if this was a sanctioned effort or some sort of wild-card. It seems that in 2015 there was a flurry of discussion around these issues but more sporadic since.

I understand it may be difficult to work out. But I think there is a core issue here for the future of WikiTree to integrate DNA and One-Name. I've been with the Guild (GOONS) for some time, subscribing to their news feed and with FTDNA. I see both sides struggling with the matter. I've created my own system at http://beasleygenealogy.net that I think is conceptually useful but I've been bogged down in building the tech structure on the website to manage it. I don't see WikiTree as my complete solution, but the existing infrastructure and ethic has a lot of potential.

I've been pleased to see how effectively my 9th cousin* Matthew Simonds has handled the interrelationship of Name and DNA in the Simonds Name Study and Simonds yDNA Study. He identified three principal spellings of the name to display on the Name Study page, but I know there are other spellings that might possibly be added if additional tags were available.

*Relationship Finder says we are 9th cousins once removed, but Relationship Finder overlooked a different ancestral line that makes us 9th cousins.

Looks  nice. thanks.
Thanks Ellen - that's an interesting example. I'm also interested in the combination of One Name, yDNA, and Clan categories going forward.

Hi Doug,  I've tried adding more information to the category page to direct people to other parts of the Bentley Name Study.  Not sure if this will help or not.  I've done some stuff with Categories feel free to see if anything I've done might help
