Sub categories

I am unsuccessfully trying to add the following categories

Eliza 1840

Duchess of Northumberland 1839

Immigrant Ships to Australia and then Arrivals to South Australia

I'm not helped very much by the help section on sub categories.

WikiTree "subcategories" are not created by adding a new subcategory to a parent category. Instead, what you do is create the subcategory and insert it in the parent category by adding the parent category to the subcategory's page.

To create a new category:

  1. Create a profile for a person who fits in the category.
  2. Add your proposed category to that profile. In this case, that could be [[Category: Eliza, 1840]]
  3. Go to the public page for the profile and click on the red link for the category that doesn't exist yet.
  4. Go down to the edit box on the page that opens up, and insert the code for the parent category (or categories) for the new category. In this case, those would be [[Category: Immigrant Ships to Australia]] and [[Category: Arrivals to South Australia]]. Below that, you can also add a description, and links to resources.

Excellent summary, Ellen! Thanks for helping.

My post is based on the presumption that David has already created the categories for the ships and just needs to add them to the hierarchy to make them "go green!" (step 4).
Ellen - thank you.

Now I understand.

Hello, David!

I "get" category hierarchy and can help you. But first I need to clarify what you want done.

If I understand correctly, you want to add categories for 2 different ships (Eliza 1840 and Duchess of Northumberland 1839) under 2 other categories (Immigrant Ships to Australia and Arrivals to South Australia). You want each ship's category under both of the other categories.

Post a comment under my answer to let me know! Also let me know if you want instructions so you can "do it yourself" or if you just want me to take care of it (or a little of both!).

Thank you, Lindy. I have now fixed it all up, after reading Ellen's contribution.
