Was there really a "Robert Eliot of Dedham"?

NEHGR 44:367 (1890) reports that Elizabeth French, daughter of William French, married "Robert Eliot of Dedham".

However, Anderson's Great Migration profile of William French (GM2:2:591, 2001) states that she married Richard Ellis, and goes on to clarify "(The published Cambridge church records call her 'Elizabeth now Elliot & now joined at Dedham' [CaChR 8], presumably an error in transcription of the surname.)"

Elizabeth and Richard were married in 1650 when she was about 21 years old, remained married until his death in 1694, and she died his widow in 1697 ("Elizabeth wife of Left. Richard Ellis deceased July 21 1697", Dedham VR), so there isn't time for her to have married both of them.

I believe "Robert Eliot" was an error and was always intended to refer to Richard Ellis.

Therefore I propose that Eliot-135 be merged into Ellis-3146 and an explanation added to the Ellis bio.

Alternately, we could retain Eliot-135 with {{questionable}} and an explanation in the bio - not because we think he existed, but more as a placeholder so future WikiTreers don't keep re-creating him. (Given the NEHGR source, they could easily be forgiven for doing so.)

Project preference?

Cheryl,

I think retaining Eliot-135 is probably a wise idea, with the {{questionable}} template and explanation in bio as you've suggested; otherwise he's likely to get recreated ,as you've pointed out.
Cheryl, I agree with you and Jillaine on retaining Eliot to prevent re-creation

Hi Frank, thanks for these search results. Can you explain how they are relevant/how they help answer the question?

hi cheryl.  i found in ancestry.com search, NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700, page 248: ELLIS, Richard (-1694) & Elizabeth French (1629-); 19 Sep 1650, Dedham.  I believe this Richard was s/o John b.1596 and Ann Benjamin.  His mother could have been another wife of John.

His name was Richard  Ellis and it needs to be fixed as you suggest.  He occurs throughout the records of Dedham as Robert Ellis and his descendants were Ellis.
