I would think it depends on WHEN.

up until the Mongol invasion in 1200s Holy Roman Empire makes sense

After the Mongols the Hapsburgs of Austria took control of much of it. So Austrian History perhaps?

After soviet invasion Russian

Current time perhaps create a category for Hungary.

HRE in Hungary is much later than the Mongols, and Hungary was never Russia. It was a basically-independent kingdom for a millennium or so.

From memory, it's Árpád-ház (House of Árpád) kings from 1000 to 1301, then the muddle with the HRE, then Matthias the Just (died 1490), then the Ottoman invasion/Habsburgs/Transylvanian principality, then just Habsburgs/Austria-Hungary, then after WWI there's the dismembered remnant of Hungary. WWII-1990 is the Communists, but that's a political party, not a country.

I think we need more categories.

Yes I was trying to simplify.  My husband's Dad's family are all Hungarian.

His cousin escaped when the Russians came in.  My husband's family came to the US in the late 1800s and early 1900s.  

They trace back to 1271 when King Stephen V bestowed freedom on a peasant serf and gave him the name Bozzay and the town the name of Bozzai.  It is close to the current Austrian border.  I have not started adding my husband's tree to WikiTree yet.  Still getting mine added!  It is on my list however.  

He has a cousin who is still in Hungary who opened the History and Cultural Museum for the town of Felpec in Gyor.
