I'm tracing Denis FITZGERALD DOB 1848 - Ballymacelligott Province Munster - County Kerry Ireland, Immigrated to New Zealand around 1870 as a carpenter.  He married Elizabeth Jane RODGERS/ROGERS on the 25 Sep 1872 at the Catholic Cathedral in Christchurch NEW ZEALAND.  They had 10 Children. Denis died on the 1 Feb 1914 at Alexandra Hospital 14 Ferry Road Christchurch, NZ. Elizabeth or Jane as she may have been called went on to raise the children and died 22 Nov 1922 at the Lewisham Private Hospital Christchurch, NZ.  Her DOB was 1845 at Feakle, Co Clare, Ireland. As I understand they are both buried in unmarked graves at St Brigid’s 237 Whiterock Road Loburn North Canterbury NZ.  Any information would be very much really appreciated, t/u in advance.

Hi Sandy,

I have just read your Tracing of Denis Fitzgerald, he is my husband's Gt Grandfather and would like to give you are bit of a run down on what our family knows.

His birth date as far as we can ascertain is approx 1842.  We think he emmigrated around 1859, he was a Labourer and when he married Jane Elizabeth Rogers on 25 Sept 1872 in Christchurch they lived in Christchurch for a year then moved to Loburn. You are correct that Denis died on 1 Feb 1914 and is buried at St Brigids Church, I have a photo of the gravestone.  Jane Fitzgerald moved to Rangiora after Denis died when she died on 22 Nov 1922 she was also buried at St Brigid's but her name isn't mentioned on the headstone  We are not entirely sure of her date of birth but again around 1845 and in Feakle Co Clare Ireland.

If you would like to contact me I can give you more information about the children.

What is your relationship with the family.

Will be good to hear from you.
