IF this Edmund died in 1853 - that was prior to the Civil War?
Yes, it was prior to the Civll War which started in 1861.
Then how did he become a civil are vet - I am confused?
I have dyslexia when it comes to numbers.  I try to double check everything.  Edmund's son Seth was in the war of 1812 and his grandson, James, would have been a teenager when the Civil War broke out.

Edmund was married to Elizabeth Durham.  His mother was Catherine Durham, but I don't know if Catherine and Elizabeth are related.
Not a problem,.  Because of birth in 1763 I tried finding him as a Revolutionary War Soldier - but had no luck.  Then I realized it said Civil War - and wasn't sure about the dates.
