There is now a Leake Name Study. As an old English surname we are uncertain of the name's origin - it's suggested to either spring from a description of a "brook" or that of a leek farmer... Another story suggests a Norman - "de Leke" - backstory.

In the New World the family is celebrated in colonial Virginia as a first family, adding its mark to wars, politics, and the colonial way of life. Some of the associated names include Leak, Leek, Terry, Steele, Crawford, Thomas, Bennett, Covington, Ledbetter, Parsons, Bostick, Moseley, Howard, and Smith, among others.
