There are variant spellings and information on the origin can be found at

surnamedb.com  which is a free site. It's said to be introduced by the Normans.

Be sure to study the variations as frank suggested.  In all honesty I'm an amateur at this stuff, but have found some family records by checking the different spellings.

I don' know if this interests you, but, often times a family crest (shield) will reveal which one of the 12 tribes of Isreal a family descended from.

Jean, what location are you searching the VANT name ? In America, with a free account login at http://www.americanancestors.org/ ( make sure when you log , you check in the checkbox for FREE external databases ) you can look for Vants  in the in the SSDI
