Only thing is I disagree about deleting the birth year altogether. I'd rather have a guess than nothing.

I spend a lot of time looking for matches, and I add estimated birth dates when none are given to help with the process (e.g., if I'm searching for Kempton Ward born 1580, I'd know that Ward-2594 born about 1641 wasn't a match, and if I saw another Kempton Ward born about the same time, I'd compare them and maybe find a match I wasn't looking for).

Am I doing wrong by adding guesses?

Liz, I do the same thing. As I've explained elsewhere, I estimate birth dates by looking at marriage dates; subtract 25  years for males and 20 years for females (when working on colonial new england).

Frankly, I continue to feel that empty birth fields should be disallowed. ;-)

 

p.s. I added an est. birth year to kempton ward and commented out Paul's comment-- it's still there in Edit mode; I was concerned it would confuse readers.
