The Slavic Roots Project and The Collaborative Profile of the Week Present:
Frédéric Chopin

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) was a Polish composer and pianist of the Romantic Era. For inspiration you can listen here, to one of my favorites.

  1. Did Chopin marry and have children?
  2. He has parents and siblings attached. Someone can take a look at there profiles and add to them.
  3. Can he be connected to the Global Tree?
  4. Perhaps a list of music (at least partial) with links to online versions, can be added.
  5. What kind of life did he lead?
  6. He died young. Why?
  7. Anything else, that comes to mind.

It's easy to contribute to this weeks Collaborative Profile. Choose a topic, it doesn't have to be listed. Post an answer first (to avoid duplication of efforts and to keep the question fresh). You can add information directly to the profile with inline sources. You can just list the source right after the facts. Highlight it, and click on the  Cite your source with an inline reference button.

I am excited about this one as I know he never married Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin, the writer known as George Sand. Wondering how we can add - or connect - their relationship ?

I got some research done on his Mom's family via Jakub Krzyżanowski.

His father was actually French so those records should be easy to find, I hope ?

There are some references to a "cousin" that fought in the American civil war through the Krzyżanowski side but I have found no source that shows the cousin relationship yet )-: It could be a first cousin once removed.

But this Civil War General was married to an American, buried at Arlington and he seems connected on WikiTree already. WikiPedia has him as a "cousin".

Did he and Amantine have children? If they did they can get connected that way, but otherwise I think you link her in the bio
George Sand had only 2 children from her marriage to Casimir Dudevant, Maurice and Solange, Solange's paternity being questioned due to Sand's frequent affairs during the time of her conception. But Chopin is not in the picture yet, their affair began in 1838 and Solange was born in 1828.
Firstly, thanks to Maggie N.  for the research of Tekla's ancestors.

That research uncovers the answer to how Chopin and the American general are related.

Tekla Krzyzanowski Chopin was the mother of Frederic Chopin.

Tekla was the daughter of Jakub Krzyzanowski.  Tekla had a brother.  The brother had a son:  Wlodomiericz Bonawentura Krzyzanowski, the American general in question.

According to the research done by Maggie, that is no "cousin" in quotes, unless there is a question as to whether unnamed Krzyzanowski, Tekla's brother, was really Wlod's father.

Otherwise, Wlod was the first cousin of Frederic Chopin.

As to manner of death, what I read from multiple sources indicates uncertainty as to whether Frederic Chopin died of heart problems or TB.  The Wikipedia link attached to his bio includes a statement from Chopin himself that his throat and tonsils were hurting him at one point.  That link and other sites I read indicate he suffered from poor health throughout his life.

For manner of death, maybe it could be said that he died from TB and that this is what was on his death certificate, but that questions exist about this?

Cystic Fibrosis is discussed as a possible cause of death here:

Lucyna Majka, Joanna Gozdzik, Micha Witt: Cystic fibrosis – a probable cause of Frédéric Chopin’s suffering and death. (PDF; 54 kB) In: J. Appl. Genet. 44 (2003), S. 77–84.

This is about as unsourced as anything could possible be, but I remember reading a "history of the world" compiled of absurd excerpts from student papers accumulated by an English teacher.  One of the statements, in the section on composers and musicians, stuck in my mind.  It said something to the effect that "Chopin had 4 wives and 19 children and he practiced on a spinster he kept in the attic.".
Chuckle...
That same "history of the world" also said Magellan circumcised the globe with a 100 foot clipper.
Hilarious, Gaile !
George Sand was on FR2 Secrets d'Histoire this evening.

George Sand's profile was added to Wikitree sometime last summer with all her most serious relationships attached as husbands. I had them all disconnected per Wikitree rules on marriages in the data fields - though I am having serious second thoughts now as at least some of these relationships (including Chopin) deserve to be acknowledged. Not to mention all the lovers have become "floaters" now. Anyway, here is her profile (the lovers are all linked from her biography) : Aurore Dupin. I visited Nohant with my daughters this summer. A great visit.
