Where Was Joseph Friend (177*-1843) Born and Who Were His Parents?

This particular Joseph Friend was born in the 1770s, quite possibly.  There is a discrepancy as to just where he was born. He apparently died in Elkton, Washington, Illinois in 1843, where a grave is found. However, that grave suggests he was born in 1775 in Ireland. That search got me nowhere. Other trees (many in fact) over at Ancestry.com, some by relatives I never knew, all state that this Friend family is a branch from the infamous Israel Frande Friend family, of Maryland. I did find a private tree with other information that suggests this Joseph Friend was born in Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts.

I was able to search this line and gained records, from which I pulled the date of birth. I can find no marriage records of this Joseph in MA to the bride he's supposed to have had, nor can I find a death record in same. Records of a Joseph Friend marriage to an Elon "Elender" Mattison are available all over the place. They got married in North Carolina, U.S. according to International Marriage Records, 1560-1900. There is also a bond record available and several North Carolina index records.  None of the plenteous records show the year of birth for either bride or groom. So, it's up for grabs. However, this is my line. Elon has to be the bride or it's the wrong Joseph. They had several children, among whom are Anna Friend, Ludicia Friend and Strangerman Friend. This is my family. Ludicia went on to marry the father-in-law of her niece by Anna Friend. Peyton Herring. If there is no connection, it's the wrong Joseph Friend.

I do hope there is a kind, generous, better-at-research, soul out there able to pull me out of this thicket and set me back upon the right course. Any and all help is appreciated. Please, and thank you, in advance.

Sara,

That is a rather cryptic message. What is the answer, if you please? Or are you referring to the changes made on Joseph Friend's profile page? Again, I need the source material. I really don't wish to bark up the wrong 'tree'. I've already got so many Joseph Hawkins to run down I don't need to chase the wrong Friend, too. Does it make sense to you that he would travel from MA all the way down to NC to take a bride? I'm not trying to be difficult, I just am hoping to be as accurate as any genealogist can be this far into the future. Records being what they weren't in the 18th century. Please do tell me more. :D

Have you ever tried affirming Ludicia with Peyton? I was able to get connected to that tree via findagrave.com. there are multiple links for children and their spouses. I only came across 1 Peyton Herring on that site and Ludicia Friend is listed as his second wife.

Thank you. I do have the Find-A-Graves on their respective sites. However, this source can be dubious, but it's likely where I gained the names, originally. I've been at this for so many years, I can't recall when I first actually got started in the hunt. I do know that it wasn't too many years back that I made the link to the Sevier family my paternal grandfather said we had. It was via his mother, Eda Pearl Herring. Once I found a Sevier married to a Herring, who had the right child, John Wesley Herring I knew I had found the connection. Unfortunately, the listing of Ludicia's parents don't say where they were from, nor do they give their years of birth. This is partly what has me stymied. But, I do thank you for reminding me of what others have written. There may be some clue there, still. Thank you! :)
I have to add that I've gone back and taken yet another look at the Find-A-Grave for Joseph Friend. There was a link that took me to FamilySearch.org, which is just fine, I have a tree there, too. However, it took me straight to my own page on Joseph Friend. Spinning my wheels, much. :O It's either that, or the Newburyport, MA Joseph Friend, is the correct one. Hard to say. Perhaps, someone else will chime in? Also, are you related to the Peyton Herrings?
Hi, I took another look at her gravestone and unless whomever was in charge of it was completely out-of-touch with the truth, it states she was the wife of Payton Herring and the daughter of Joseph Friend, besides giving the date of her decease.
