Finally, with help from Gill-1291 on G2G, I got the name of my great great grandfather Oliver Fountain mother's name right: clouthine Bruisseau. I corroberated that with a MA death record on Ancestry.com. (interesting, the attending physician at Oliver Fountain's time of death was a W.A. Brosseau, close enough to Oliver's mother's maiden name that the doctor could have, given misspellings and transcription errors, been related!)
Anyway, Oliver and his parents all have Canada listed for birthplaces. Likely, Quebec. They lived in Black Brook, NY for a while until pushing south.
Before this new information, I had Oliver's mother listed as Clotilde Brisson, who also lived in Black Brook, NY, in the same time frame! Could this be the same person? Her husband is Jean-Baptiste Fontaine, a more French variant of the surname "Fountain." I ended up with her because that's what I made of the hand-written record I had. I could solve this problem and begin moving backward in the family genealogy again if I could clarify who the parents of Clouthine (a.k.a. Clotilde?) and Jean-Baptiste Fountain were. (I know there were a lot of Fr. Canadian Marie's and Jacques, but this is ridiculous!)
