Coco Chanel needs to be connected to the tree.

Famous fashion icon Coco Chanel was created seven years ago and not yet connected to the larger wikitree. I noticed the other day she had no family or bio and today a profile manager deleted themselves. This individual is in the notable project and thought someone might be interested. I'd work on it if I could but no extra time right now.
WikiTree profile: Coco Chanel

Whew - I took a look at her. Might try to put a few things in her profile a bit later. She's going to be a tough one. I saw some resources out there where people claim to have established her tree, but these are the same people who have her married to one or more of her male "friends" of which she had many. She is famous for not being married, so I find their research dubious at best. I might establish parents based on some of these resources (Family Search IGI and such, Geni, possibly rootsweb, etc.) but I haven't found any primary resources I could rely on as of yet.
Similarly I was trying to make a connection for her based on the chain on Geni where Adrienne Marcelline Chanel is given as her first cousin, and Adrienne marries André de Choubersky. Their daughter Anne de Choubersky has a child with Archduke Andreas Salvator of Austria, which quickly links her to other European aristocrats.

I feel like I'm just copying poorly sourced genealogies and should stop before I embarrass myself further. Anyone want to try to make this connection using French archives?
I also believe the biography might a word-for-word copy from Wikipedia - so while we're here, I'd like to take a look at this and we may need to rewrite this to avoid any concerns on this area too.
I'll try to do something based on Karen's clues above (thank you, Karen) but the Archives du Gard are unfortunately not on line yet. So no access to the birth record of Gabrielle's father. Maybe there is a way to work around this, though.

I notice that she's not listed on the Notables Project page, nor on the Connectors Chat page, so very likely, most of the people who would be motivated to work on her profile didn't even know it was there. I'll add her in both places.

If Coco Chanel could say thank you for helping I'm sure she would, but  since she cannot, I'll say it for her....."thank you so much everyone!"

Hi there. I have added a permalink to Gabrielle's birth record (no trace of the alleged middle name "Bonheur" there, and she was indeed recorded with the name Chasnel) and also a stub profile for her mother.

Not only is she going to be difficult to connect (as Wikitree has very few profiles of French ordinary people, as her parents were: same problem as Louis Braille) but her family will be extra difficult to trace, as they were itinerant as well as poor.

While I thank you all for pointing Coco Chanel's profile out, I can't help adding that (with my French bias) she would be less important than other French unconnected notables, for example Victor Hugo, Georges Clemenceau, Gustave Eiffel... Not to mention all those who don't even have profiles.

And Greg, thank you and you are correct, I for one did not know her profile was out there, yet I've been searching specifically for overlooked profiles of French notables...

Isabelle I'm glad you pointed out the other French individuals also. She came up on a list of top historical figures so other people might be searching for her too. But I'm in agreement the others are very notable also and earned our attention.

It sounds like your reminder of the lack of everyday French citizens is an opportunity to spread the word of this site. Social media being probably the easiest and quickest.

Based on Karen Tobo's excellent clues, I have managed to link Gabrielle Chanel to her cousin Adrienne using the following sources:

  1. Gabrielle Chanel's birth record, in Saumur (archives du Maine-et-Loire)
  2. Her parents' marriage record (almost illegible on my viewer, but consistent with info found on Geneanet), mentioning Gabrielle's paternal grandparents Adrien Chanel and Virginie Fournier (archives du Puy-de-Dôme)
  3. The birth record of Hippolyte Chanel, giving evidence that Hippolyte and Albert (Gabrielle's father) were brothers (archives de l'Hérault, as Hippolyte was born in Montpellier)
  4. The birth record of Adrienne Marceline Chanel in Issoire (Archives du Puy-de-Dôme).

Note that we don't have the birth records of Albert Chanel or his father, as they were born in the Gard département, which has not put its archives on line yet. We also don't have the marriage record of Hippolyte, as it took place in Vichy in 1908 and the archives de l'Allier do not give online access to 20th century documents.

Adrienne Chanel is already connected through her daughter Anne de Choubersky. This is too recent for primary sources, but enough to see Gabrielle Chanel connected by tomorrow.
