Hey there Sourcerers! It's time to start January's Sourcing Extravaganza. Thank you to everyone who participated last month. Here are some of the tallies from last month:

*December's top sourcerer was Hans Hofmann with 3,021 profiles improved.

*There was 1 new sourcerer in December.

*There were 40 sourcerers total in December.

*Total profiles improved were 4,652.

2016's totals:

*Top Sourcerer overall is Hans Hofmann with 8,236 profiles sourced

*The final total for 2016 was 43,973 profiles sourced!

We'll get the tallies up on this page later today. Now on to this month...

image

To participate:

Remember, your sources need to be as full and specific as possible, so others find them useful. That means, if there is a link to the work mentioned, you must include it. If it is a page from a book, the page needs to be included so others can easily see where you found the reference.

When you can, it's great to do a bit more while adding sources, like clean up the gedcom leftovers or help the formatting from older profiles. Sources are important, but if you can't find them among all the other stuff, they aren't helping as much as they could.

Onto January's challenge:

You only need to answer the post once, and just edit your post to add your new profiles, continuing in a comment on your answer as necessary. Please number your contributions (a number every ten or hundred works just fine). It helps us tally at the end of the month much faster. See last month's challenge for examples.

* All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories  or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced-you cannot create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the numbers already on WikiTree that need sources. Adding sources will help merges happen, too, which will improve our tree. Showing folks what sources you're using helps newer researchers see just what's available out there for us to access. Another great source of unsourced profiles is to check out orphaned profiles.

* The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added. That said, if you can add a number of sources to a profile, all the better. Maybe we'll switch things up and see how many sources added y'all can do one month.

* If you attempt to add sources to a profile and just cannot find any, please add a note under a section like === Research Notes === giving where you tried to find records and you can sign it with the four tildes (~~~~) so the date is applied as well. Something like "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry" would be fine. Or, "Searched google for an obituary and didn't find one." That way the next researcher knows where to start.

* If the only source on a profile is "Ancestry tree" or "Geni.com" it can count as unsourced, and you can add better sources to it to count in your tally.

* If you find a match and can merge a profile into an already sourced profile, that counts, too. You still found a source, plus you eliminated a duplicate. Awesome!

We are now actively in our January Challenge, which will run through January 31st. Ask any questions here in the thread, otherwise, SOURCE!

To see all stats, you can view the Google Sheet we keep it all on here.

Is there anyway to search the unsourced profiles?  For instance, I speak French and it makes sense to work on these profiles, but all I see is one VERY long list by surname.  Any way to break it down?  Thanks.
I just answered my own question :-)  I searched by surname and then clicked the "unsourced" link
Some more stats for anyone who's interested:

Top 10 Sourcerers of All Time:

Hans Hofmann, Robert Keniston, Carolyn Martin, John Elkin, Lucy Lavelle, Jayme Arrington, Marj Adams, Star Kline, Myrtis Jane Bishop, and Charlotte Shockey!

Top 10 Sourcerers for December 2016:

Hans Hofmann, Natalie Trott, John Elkin, Linda Green, Janine Barber, Beulah Cramer, Igor Rowen, Robert Keniston, Niek Boevé, and Debi Hoag.

Thanks to everyone for all the sources you've added and all the profiles you've improved. Here's to another great month!

Emma,

You could also look at some of the geographical unsourced categories:

etc.

Excellent idea, thank you John!
Running a bit behind, but I'm in for January's Sourcerer's Challenge! I'd not seen any mention of them since I'd participated a few month's back. Will there be teams again, and if so, will I remain with Record Romancer's?

I've been working on the Patty family tree, though I've not added much I've found on WikiTree. I am trying to figure out how to compile it into a 'book form' as a gift for my Mother-in-law's upcoming 80th birthday, but will get busy 'sourcing', for the last challenge while searching I found connections to my own trees! It was a challenge I truly enjoyed as well as finding connections I'd not known about!
Patty,
If no one has answered this somewhere else, no, each person does
these monthly challenges as individuals.  Go to the top of this page
and it tells you how to participate, in other words, mark answer, and continue after your first entries as edits

.

Why do we receive so many emails because people are answering this question? Your WikiTree G2G comment has been added to - I'm not receiving the emails about comments here, but every time someone adds to their list of sources....Is there a way to stop this... 20-30 emails a day is cray-cray! Thank you!

Char~

I wondered if that was happening to people who have commented on any of my thread. Especially since I am updating several times a day (I lost my work after a computer shut down so I am saving more often) I would love to know also how to stop getting emails in other situations.
Char--

It looks like you can go to your original post on that thread and click edit.  Then unclick "Email me... if a comment is added after mine"

Can I have the 51 profiles I sourced for the Saturday sprint added to my total? Or is that separate?

Yes, you can add Saturday Sourcing Sprint profiles! Just put something like "51 profile from the 1/28/17 Sprint" in your list.
How do I join this challenge?

Jacqueline, January is over, but you can join us for the February challenge by clicking on this link:  February Sourcers Challenge

With a much larger pool of participants, and increased lists of profiles,
is there a possibility of having the choice of going to pages 2, 3, etc,
also being available at the beginning of the pages?  Hans and Emma
literally are doing thousands of names, by themselves, which totals more than everyone put together in some of the early months of the challenge.
Scanning long lists gives me trouble.  I also can't read on a moving train.  I try to get in on the first page each month to avoid this problem.

Indeed, Beulah, this is definitely a problem.  I really want access to the other pages at the top of answers.  It would help with not only sourcerers but also other G2G questions that prove provoking to the community.

I'm in for January.  Missed 2 days, but I'll catch up.
