Has anyone ever heard of the surname Icenroad?

I have no family members left on my fathers side to ask. Exensive gogle searching reveals almost nothing. I am trying hard to find an origin for my name, and am guessing at some point it's changed over the years. I have no idea where to look now though

I'm interested to know where it originates, too, just because these are the sorts of things that pique my curiosity.

As for where to search? I almost always start with the repositories of records on FamilySearch.org  I just did a plain, vanilla search with only your last name, and here is a list of records it came up with: https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Aicenroad~

I also highly recommend reading through the How to Use WikiTree help page (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/How_to_use_WikiTree) and pay special attention to the links in the Getting Started section. There's a helpful guide there for people who are new to genealogy.

Also, once you get your feet under you, I think you would probably benefit from setting up a One Name Study (see project page here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Name_Studies).

I would suggest that you just start filling in family for John, and you may ultimately run into leads as to who his parents were.

It's like a big jigsaw puzzle. :-)

Take a few minutes to go read that help page, though, and you'll start to get some ideas on how to proceed.

Normally, we suggest that you start by filling in your immediate family members -- parents, grandparents, etc. -- and then you start searching for records based on their names, birthdates, and locations. By sourcing your more immediate relatives, you'll begin to discover other relatives and other branches, and you can work your way backward in time.

Also, start playing around with all the options on the FamilySearch page I gave you. If you scroll down that list and look on the left-hand side, you'll see some options you can play with, e.g., birthplace, residence, etc.

You can filter the records based on those options.

Just spend some time getting comfortable with sorting through those records and learning how to use their website. You can uncover a great deal about your family by using their record collections.

This is really exciting, Nicholas! There are so many records for you to get started with. :-)

Your surname really does remind me of Ole Evinrude's, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evinrude_Outboard_Motors -rude is Norwegian,-rud is sometimes seen in Swedish surnames. I would go the usual genealogical route, by researching your family and then seeing what you find.

A google search for Icenroad came up with and Icen Road in a part of England. This seems like a good possibility to me.

Nice idea about the road name but doubt it as it's quite a modern road name. It's just down the road from Roman Way and the name derives from the Roman road network . There is  also an  Icen way in Dorchester. The origin is the Via Iceniana  or  Icknield Way which ran from Isca Dumnoniorum (Exeter) by way of Londinium (London) to Venta Icenorum (Caister St. Edmunds, Norfolk).  The name was probably revived by Thomas Hardy the Dorset novelist who called it the  Icening Way. The 'road' called Icen Way in Dorchester has some  old housing but it wasn't called that in former times.  For a long time it was  several roads with appropriate names,  Gaol Lane which led through Bell Street  (named after an Inn) to Gallows Hill. The Weymouth road is as said relatively modern.

Could they be from Germany speaking country originally? The german word "eisen" means iron I think and is pronounced somewhat like ice in English. Perhaps someone who knows German language better might have a proposal of a German name.

The 1880 US Federal Census includes a notation for Father's Birthplace and Mother's Birthplace.  If you find any of the Maryland Icenroads (or other spelling variations) on the 1880 Census, they should indicate where the parents were born  - if in Maryland, another State or another Country.

I use the FREE site:  http://us-census.mooseroots.com  as it has almost all the USA Census reports from 1790 to 1940 (the most recent that is public).

I also would try the German "Eisen" spelling or look up Norwegian one for the same thing.

It's more likely to have originally been Eichen (oaken) rather than Eisen.

I live outside of Baltimore, Maryland and have casual contact with 2 Icenroad families. One family is on a competing swim team (I see the names on cards as I them Iine up) and another family has a child in my daughters' school, but not in their grade. I don't know either "personally" but have seen the name and the kids that have the name.
