Many thanks Frank - had some of those sources already covered - my question was more on what to do with all the Ancestry references but every little bit helps.

The Ancestry.com sources I usually leave intact on a merged, managed by someone else or adopted profile.They are pointless and useless in my opinion unless the reader of a given profile has a paid for Ancestry.com account. I prefer and exclusively use only sources with original documents that anyone can view.

Some of these ancestry sources aren't useless, they cite the original documents/index .

 S-1530372185 " Class: RG 9; Piece: 1599; Folio: 65; Page: 3; GSU roll: 542837." If you follow the link it takes you to the same page which tells you (rightly) that this is the 1861 census. (it's the official ref) With that reference and especially with the info in the bio that he was living at St Levan in 1861, the page is easy to find elsewhere.

BUT I note that ref 9 is actually to a transcription of the same census.

S-1530372182  is to the free BMD death index

If   I had no personal interest in the profile, I  would leave it as is. If I  adopted the profile. I would alter the references eg a citation to te 1861 census something like this

District of St. Levan Class: RG 9; Piece: 1599; Folio: 65; Page: 3; (the GSU roll index is an ancestry ref and can be omitted) image viewable on ancestry, full transcription Susan Hoyle and Mark Hattam , Cornwall OPC http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kayhin/61599a.html

For the Free BMD I would refer to the free BMD  site or the free GRO site, (nowadays the latter because it gives age at death, even with the earlier deaths,  though it  requires registration to search and view)

When I had done this I would be able to remove those ancestry refs with no loss of information.(NB It is my personal decision to use charitable or government sites in preference to Family Search when there is an alternative)

Not sure what I would do about S-1530370364 which redirects to a private tree. Someone could use this to contact the presumably family member so I might leave the link under other sources (but reduce/alter some of the extraneous gumph!

Like Helen I try to find a free source that supports the stated fact, but sometimes I don't have time or simply can't find such a source.

In these cases how I would typically handle the Ancestry Family Tree is by clicking on the link and seeing if I can identify the user who 'owns it' and whether it is 'public' or 'private' - in this case "Col Myers" is the owner and it is a private tree

An Ancestry user looking at a public member tree should be able to be more specific identifying the name of the family tree, and the name of the person the link points to, and their outside vital dates.

SIDEBAR: The guideline on acknowledgments says they are usually unnecessary as it is recorded in the change history, but may be retained to acknowledge a substantive contribution to a profile. A 'compromise position' I often adopt is to simply list the gedcom(s) as an additional source - using the acknowledgments section on this profile as an example:

yeah, typically the Ancestry tree references are only viewable by someone with a paid account. If the tree still exists, or is not marked private, then is can possibly still hold some valuable clues for more research, if needed.
