I am looking for my dad but I am running into dead ends.  everytime I find a lead the living family is private.  I did the DNA test and found 3rd and 4th cousins that couldn't be on my moms side.  I can't get anyone to respond to messages so I go based off who I can see in their tree but it always leads to a blackout of the names I might know.  my mom was a free spirit who went from place to place. in 1979 she ran into a man named Lorenzo leyva.  he was working in Washington state picking fruit and working doing field work. places he was worked in Washington were dryden and cashmere.  he had a brother named Luis leyva who was married to a woman named ?Leona? or something near that and they had two children ages 5 &8 I. 1979.  Luis was said to work and live? in a fig orchard in Hendon California.  Lorenzo never knew my twin sister and I were conceived.  when my mom Shelley dalen went back to tell him she said he had already moved for work and didn't know how to find him.

Looks like the Leyva durazo tree branches off to Leyva barrera or just barrera.  I think this might be the piece I was missing!  Does anyone have information on Leyva barrera or barrera.
Hi Shawn,  I wondering if you got my email answer to your question. My name is Betty Durazo.  Just in case you didn't, I was telling you that on Ancestry.com there are Durazos (besides myself) with DNA testing done. Also, I know that there are Durazo's and Leyva's there too.  You might have luck if you look into it.  Let me know what else I can do to help.  Also, I would advise to try the free trial.  You'll find a lot more information that way.

Good luck,

Betty Durazo
Thank you betty for your help.  I was able to narrow my family down after one of my matches sent me some valuable information.  Wow how complicated families can be! There were 2nd marriages and adoptions that were complicating the information.
So glad you're finding your way!  Best of luck to you and hope you find your father.

On FaceBook there is a group called DNA Detectives which can help you find living relatives. It's a closed group which means you have to apply to join.

Good Luck with your search.

I'm trying to use DNA to find a lost ancestor, and it can be a lot of work, especially since few people will respond.  It would be useful if you could get your mother to test.  Testing your mother would definitively rule out all of your maternal matches.  If you search Google for DNA adoptions, you'll see a few useful sites which can give you more detailed information about how to pursue finding someone in your situation.  You are definitely not alone.  Leyba might be a more common spelling of the surname.  Since none of my cousins responded on what I assume is my great-grandmother's side of the family, I started building their trees backwards in Wikitree to try to figure out how they are related to each other.  It's taken hours of work, but I am finally figuring how out some of my cousins are related to each other.  My ancestor is hidden in one of those trees, and I am determined to find her.  I read an account of someone who was adopted who essentially did the same thing, except that she had help with the project.  So it can be done, and you just have to keep working at it.  Also, eventually you might find someone who responds--maybe.

My mom died when I was 18. All the information I have I found was after she had already died.  Thanks for the encouragement and sharing your story.  I never even thought I would even look for who my father was but as I get older my curiosity has me wondering.
Hi Shawn:

Sorry to hear that you lost your mother when you were so young.  Any relative who could test from your mother's side could help.  In trying to find my great-grandmother, I started looking for cousins--not consciously for DNA testing, but when I found a cousin, I asked if she'd test, and she didn't reply, so I dropped it.  I did eventually find a cousin on my great-grandmother's side who was excited about getting tested, and it's people who match both of us in Ancestry that I'm working my way through.  It would be great if I could talk a few other cousins into uploading their DNA to GEDMatch so we could find out exactly how we're related, but basically I know that I want to find my great-grandmother more than anyone else in my family.  My brothers have no interest in getting tested; my mother agreed to the test, but none of my really close cousins are interested.  It's just hit or miss and persistence.  It's so hard when you know so little. Lorenzo Leyva isn't the most common name in the world, so you never know.

I would subscribe to the two other major DNA sites. AncestryDNA is only 1 of those sites.  You will certainly find a significant number of DNA cousins who subscribe to www.23andme.com and www.ftdna.com (Family Finder) that do not subscribe to AncestryDNA. You may even find closer living relatives than those on AncestryDNA.

Shawn,

Sorry to hear about your situation.  I've never heard of Hendon california, but I have heard of Herndon, which is right in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley halfway between Fresno, CA and Madera.  Lots of orchards!

Also saw from your profile that you are on GEDMatch.  If you do a "one to Many" you may reach a few folks that way through the emails listed. Also you want to check back every few weeks because new people test all the time.  New matches are signified by having the ID in green, which all of yours are at the moment.  One thing your DNA results on GEDMatch can tell you though for sure is that you have a wide variety of ethnic origins, including Amerindian.  Hope this helps, Ken

Sorry it was a autocorrect problem.  It is Herndon California.

I looked at your one to many matches on GEDmatch and one name jumped out. So I looked at common kits between our two GED ID's.  You don't match me but A035322 matches me and you.  I suspect it is on my unknown paternal grandmother side so I can't help.  BUT if I find out how we are connected I will let you know.  We seem to have other kits in common if you lower the threshold from 10.  I will be in touch if I find out anything more.
