I believe the gender of this couple of switched - can I fix this easily?

Question

In doing a lot of research on my family tree over the last couple of weeks I have come to believe that this site (and many others) have the sexes of this couple switched. I would like to fix this if possible. I think the man's name has thrown people off, because it does sound feminine. 

The couple in question: 

 

Julienne Royer (1587 - 1680)

WikiTree: Royer-218 

And 

Paschale Dodier (1583 - 1671)

WikiTree: Dodier-21

 

This web site and many others lists Paschale as the husband and Julienne as the wife when I believe it is the opposite. 

Of course I could be wrong. I'm new to all of this. But I did see confirmation of my theory on Geni.com, where Julienne is listed as male and Paschale as female. Also, my records show they had a son, Wilhelm Rheyer , 1630-1691 (not on this site) who was given the Julienne's last name - to me a clue that Julienne is a male.

Both of the couple have a source cited

• File of his grandson Sébastien Dodier in Fichier Origine

This indicates that

Les actes suivants sont à Igé (St-Martin). Son père Sébastien est baptisé le 10-02-1609. Deux soeurs sont baptisées: Marie, 31-12-1629 et Marie (pionnière), 27-01-1643. Deux frères et une soeur sont nés à Trois-Rivières, Catherine (vers 1634), Michel (1645) et Pierre (1648). Il retourne en France en 1653. Ses grands-parents paternels sont Pascal Dodier et Julienne Royer, m. 01-02-1586. Ses grands-parents maternels sont Louis Belhomme et Françoise Rothier.

This clearly suggests Pascal as husband and Julienne as wife. A document is attached including a little more on their marriage entry. Therefore you need to check the registers of Igé and confirm what the entries say for their children's baptisms and the couple's marriage. For the moment this looks like good research based on original records and the current situation on Wikitree reflects this source.

Sébastien Dodier-18 is the son of this couple having Paschale's last name.

Some sources on this profile confirm his parent's genders are as is.

I don't believe those sources are correct due to my own research...but I don't know! It's so confusing - I see several sources listing it both ways. But of course that was long ago. My search continues! Thanks for your time.

Not necessarily. If Wilhelm was a illegitimate child, he would have got the last name from his mother, not from his father!

Julienne is a common female french given name, as Pascal is a male one (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal_(given_name)), so I believe the gender is correct here.

Geni.com is no reliable source after all, since "Marcelline Vaughan" had entered the information, and we know nothing about their sources. Can easily be a careless mistake. Maybe it would be a good idea just to contact and ask her.

Or do you have a copy of the original parish birth register? If yes, their may be linguistic signs (e.g. "filius" (male child) versus "filia" (female child) in latin).

Many men are named Pascal or Paschale (pronounce the c or ch like K).

No.man would ever be named Julienne or Julia. Only Julio or Julien or Julian.

As to the last name of Wilhelm, he was probably born to Julianne before she.met and married Paschale .  Children.born.outside the bond of marriage.often carry the mother's surname.  It happens all the time and likely has been happening since time immemorial.

It annoys me when.there is the suggestion that a child or birth date.must be wrong because of a different or lacking marriage date. In point of fact, lots of marriages happen after a pregnancy starts. My uncle Al was the largest and most well developed premature baby in history!
