How to document sources on this site.

Question

Just need help how to do the sources on this site.   I am new to the site, less then a week.   I have entered 4 generations of grandparents and now trying to go back on put the sources.   I came to the part where it let me search ancestry.  Can I write them in or can I click the source from ancestry or other site to add it to the profile.  Thanks.

Many times ancestry links become dead links on WikiTree ie.  You add the URL to the ancestry page to the Profile and save it.  Then when someone else clicks on that ancestry URL, you just end up on a Buy a Subscription to Ancestry page, unless they just happen to already have a subscription at Ancestry and are already logged in.  There are thousands of these on WikiTree profiles that do just that, and eventually get removed as they have no value.

You might want to try adding one and then re-open the profile when you are not logged in to Ancestry to see if it works or not.

If you use Familysearch, most records have a specific section that is marked Citation - those you can cut and paste to WikiTree as sources.

When I use a link to a site that I am afraid might not be accessible to everyone, I usually try to abstract whatever source I found on the site.  It is a bit of a pain, but it is the best solution I've found.  (I generally consider FamilySearch is always going to be accessible, but anything I found on a  pay site, I would abstract.)
