Could we add sources category to find tab

Question

If it were on the find tab it would be easier for everyone to find. I find getting to the sources categorization page a bit cumbersome. Since we want people to source everything and it is how we claim to be better, shouldn't we make it as easy as possible? You could merge it with information about sources and maybe categorize primary and secondary sources, with all the appropriate disclaimers. If you wanted to get fancy you could come up with a scheme to rate sources or have a G2G category for rating sources. You could have regional category and name category.

wow I didn't even know this category existed.  As much as I'm a source hound, I doubt I'd ever use such a category. And even if others would find such a category helpful, my quick scan of pages included in the Source category would not lead me to recommend its use. I focused on New England and Massachusetts.  They're not well organized. The sources are not even alphabetized on a given page-- by author or title. I'd be far more likely to recommend Familysearch's wiki which organizes and annotates sources very well.

But let me be curious here. How are others using these wikitree source category pages? How would you like to be able to use them that can't be done through existing collections elsewhere?

Further digging reveals a huge underlying effort to create source PAGES for each and every source-- But outside of what other wikis would call a "namespace." So these source pages are mixed in with all other free space pages making them less easy to find. So, yeah, one would need to rely on the category system to find them. This is a much larger topic than I realized.

 (Sue, it would be on such pages where commentary on the value/credibility of the source.)

I have used every one of these books https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Sources-England#Dorset  but  though I was aware that there was a list, I hadn't realised that it was a category and  haven't categorised the profiles that use these sources

 I also hadn't realised that the lists were in such detail; eg with links to individual volumes of Dorset Notes and queries. I also hadn't  realised that  there was  an LDS copy of the 3rd edition of Hutchins. I've been using a library copy of a modern reprint which is still in copyright and had not found an online copy(it's an enormous 4 vol work, fairly rare as many copies have been broken up for the line drawings . I had been wondering whether I could afford/justify. the £500 upwards that it would cost to buy.

  And Dorset is just one of the very many English counties that have that has been covered with similar lists,

Helen, not clear to me that we should put the *category* for the source on the profile page of the person. But from what I could see, we're being encouraged in our citation to link to the source *page*

I have been doing cut and paste for the citation of the sources I use a lot, it makes it a lot easier for me to provide more information in the source area below the biography section of the profile. Also it is a way to link to online copies of the books. It has been very useful for me. It is all relatively new and I would like to see it organized in a useful way and getting to it more obvious, hence the tab suggestion. There are sources you have to poke around to find. Maybe people that know where all the good sources are already don't need it, but I think it is great. Organization and access are both key. There could be a high level where the general Sources description could have links that get to primary sources for regions. Also links the secondary source pages, (surname, family histories, and regional...)

The best would be to explain what every source claim and what facts is based on that plus some description how we analyse the source.

Seems like Evidentia has a much better solution to this than recreating a set of free space pages to do the same thing.
