Don't understand skips

I don't understand skips. There isn't always a YES/NO. Sometimes its a MAYBE on a match. What do I do then?

Also, what actually happens if I skip? What if the people they're connected to are ok? I don't want to delete/orphan them (or, whatever happens to them).

Thanks,

PJ

Generally it's best to skip li8kely matches as you can always go back and a new profile for someone you skipped in a GED but didn't need to.  This is easier than having to get merged with another profile manager's profile. If it's a match of two of your own profiles it's not a big deal since it's a lot easier to merge them later.  But you can only do this a few times in order for your GED to be rejected, so pick your possible matches carefully.  This is another reason to only enter smallish GEDs.

So, you should understand the process of what you're doing with the gedcompare... you are in the process of importing your records into WikiTree, and are comparing each person record with what's already in WikiTree.

Therefore, if you skip [importing], then that person from your record will not be imported (because you think its already in WikiTree).

If its a maybe, then you should examine the details of the person already in WikiTree and compare in more detail with your records. As Dave says, usually its easier to manually enter someone later that you skipped by mistake, than it is to import a duplicate and have to merge them back together later.

The key is...we really want to try and avoid adding duplicate records.
