Do you have any dates to go with Alexander Campbell?  It probably would help if we were to find the right one. But what is your question? Are you needing information on Alexander or what? Please give any information if you know it so that we might could find the right one? Thanks Nancy
Thanks Nancy, there are so many and I am stuck my mothers Father was Arthur Donald B1878 in the eastern Cape ? Grahamstown, on his Birth certificate says his Father was Alexander and mother is Elizabeth, (my aunt told me he was born in 1854 (not sure where, Scotland or  his wife she said was Elizabeth Laing. South Africa) somehow she said we are connected to the dukes, but with not proper dates I cant link it up. Thank you for your reply

Hi. My name's Anne. My ancestors emigrated to Australia from Scotland and I've been finding my way around the Scottish records. Maybe I can make some suggestions.

So we have an Arthur Donald Campbell born 1878 and his father,  Alexander Campbell born around 1854 in Scotland. Is that right?

Was Alexander the one who migrated to South Africa or was it his son Arthur?

Hello Anne

I have just seen your message, going though the Wikitree Messages, I don't know how I missed your question. I do apologise as it has Been a while... And I am still searching for Alexander Campbell B1854 Parents unknown.

Alexander married a Elizabeth Lang In South Africa and all his children were born there, He was Born in Scotland and immigrated to South Africa. I found one on a Ship who was abt 23 years old in the 1870 about. He married Elizabeth in and about 1875, In Grahamstown South Africa.

My late Aunt seemed to think his mother was a Gordon as 2 of his children has second names like eg one was Ethel Gordon... Arthur Donald Campbell, the Eldest son also named his daughter Ethel Gordon, and his son Herbert Gordon, and another son also had Gordon as a second name. I would appreciate any help to break this brick wall. There are other Campbells who went to SA but they don't have him in there tree's. I have had a DNA match to lady in the USA who has a Mary Campbell B1760 and another Campbell in Australia with no info either.Cant find any matching names. There are so many Alexander Campbell's. He might have gone to SA with Parents, or on his own.

KInd regards

Yolande
Hi Yolande, i do have Alexander Campbells in my line and I do have Herberts and Arthurs from the 1870 to 1900's era.

My original Campbell line is from Killearnan Parish in Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. My particular line John who was born in 1777 left Urray / Killearnan in the late 1700's and pick up his marriage in Kemnay Aberdeenshire in 1804. John was born in March 1777 in Urray, Ross and Cromarty to parents Kenneth Campbell and Margaret McDonald.

The main branch of the family remained in Knockbain, Ross and Cromarty. I do share a Y chromosome match with an Donald John Campbell from the USA  who is descended from my John's brother Donald who was born in abt 1780 in Knockbain, Rossshire?. On Donalds death certificate in Knockbain in 1868 it states that his parents were Kenneth Campbell and Margaret McDonald so between the Y match and the paper records that I have Kenneth and Margaret are our common ancestors.

Donald Campbell married Helen Campbell in Knockbain if I remember correctly around 1812 and had a number of sons including Alexander. Also Helen's father was Alexander Campbell or McIvor. do not know if Helen and Donald were related.

When I started this message all I wanted to ask was do you have a GEDmatch kit number?

Regards Colin D Campbell

Ps born Scotland, married Phalabowra S.A, working career Australia and now retired in New Zealand.
Hi Colin thank you for the message, You sure have travelled.Wow would be great if we are on the right track. Firstly yes I do have a few fam members with Ged match No's.are  A859946,  A147408,  A424146,  A234310 JB7359209 this last one he has a father who was Campbell. rest of us have Campbell Mothers. Like my brother and 2 female cuz.

I do know there was a MacDonald somewhere as my mom always said they had MacDonald Cuz's. Also said originally from Inverness - but I have been seeing a couple coming up in Ross Cromarty. There are so many Donalds and Johns and Alexanders. I had a DNA done on my Cuz Donald his dad is John, and Johns an my mom, sibling was Donald, another sibling was Thomas Alexander, there father was Arthur Donald.  and there grandad was Alexander, Came from Scotland went to S Africa married in East London, Farmed in Barkly East, then to Natal.

Do you have an Ancestry tree or on Geni? or Gedmatch no's to? What made you move to South Africa, there seem to be matches I have seen living in Australia too.

Hi Yolande, well I have just checked Gedmatch with the kit numbers provided and there are those that would say it is just noise, however my personal opinion is that we may have something due to the regularity of the segments that we all share. First of all I had to reduce the tolerance to 3cMs on all the kits to get any results. My kit number is T830011 under the name of Khaki (as in Khaki Campbell Duck).

If we do have some linkage it is 8/9 generations back as Kenneth Campbell and Margaret McDonald were my GGX5 Grandparents.

Regards relationship between Killearnan / Knockbain and Inverness, I would  say about 10 miles but shall have to check it out.  (clancampbell1@mac.com)

Regards Colin Campbell

Just had a look on Scotlands People for Alexander and found this two records as possibilities. Not sure why the fathers are not shown, I shall go and serif I can find them in the 1861 Scottish census.
